Henry, The cause of achalasia is unknown. There are several theories which include infection, heredity or an abnormality of the immune system and some researchers think it may be linked to a

virus, but none of these have been proven.

I've read a lot, and they do not know the cause. I think some

elderly people have similar swallowing difficulties, but that's not

the same as the kind you get at a younger age. There is no known

cause or cure.

My mother told me she had an Aunt back when she was a kid who had difficulty swallowing. She said her aunt used to gag on meat and couldn't swallow it.

Maybe there is a hereditary component that shows up rarely but in certain families.

Maybe it's a multivariate cause such as hereditary weakness and viral interaction working together.

There is a man who I work with who also has a problem swallowing. We don't know if it's achalasia, but he prefers not to treat it, he doesn't like doctors and he says he can live with it. It sounds funny to say, but he looks like me. He reminds me of one of my uncles. Maybe I'm related to him.

first i have to say that i am the only one ( that i know of and have

asked around ) that has A in my family .

as far as the immune sys , mine is very well . i rarely get sick ....

dont drink but once a week if that.

the only thing that i can think of that would of brought this about

is stress.

back 8 months ago i started to notice a slight prob, but when i got

here to CO and started workin , is started gettin worse and worse.

so thats my 2 cents
