Hi ,

I can only imagine what you and your husband are going through right now. You've made a huge decision that will affect the rest of your life. If you are scared, I sure don't blame you one bit. I know I would be. I'm only 38, and the surgery you are facing might be my only option later on. I wish you the very best of luck. I sure hope your husband is very helpful and considerate so you'll be able to relax as much as possible after surgery.

Just wanted to let you know you have my thoughts and prayers from snowy Thunder Bay also :-)

All the best,

.

You will be in my prayers tonight. I hope that you will be able to trust in

your future and find peace about your decision soon. The day you go into

surgery we could all wear yellow ribbons! It would be nice if we all lived in

one place. But if that many achalasians all lived in one place, everyone else

would probably move out for fear they'd catch it. Ha! They'd think it was

something in the water we were all guzzling! Well, at least this online group

feels like someone is just in the next room sometimes. I know the people in

this group were a true lifeline to me when I was so frightened of my surgery.

One day I just decided to let go of my fear and trust the Dr. and God. It

worked for me. I hope you can find peace soon.

Hugs,

in Houston

I too understand your

hesitation. I had those feelings before I had my myotomy!!!

I went into it with no knowledge of what to expect. (I hadn’t found my A

family yet for support) :-(

All I know is that

from what I have read from members here who have had esophagectomies,

I feel less afraid from having read the experiences, and if I ever do have to

have my E removed, I think I will be ok with that. It helps of course knowing

that my surgeon is a master of laparoscopic surgery and he does esophagectomies laparoscopically.

I don’t think it’s

something that any of us want to think about, but still, the thought is not too

far from the surface. I think you have to go with your instincts. You know what

you need to do. You are young and have a long life ahead of you. For me, I

think it would depend on how sick I was, and how much difficulty I was having eating,

along with that, you have to weigh the risk of getting cancer from having food

sitting in your esophagus for so long. It’s also a decision of now or

later, and weighing out the quality of life you could be having as a result of

having the esophagectomy vs. your quality of life at the

present.

I do think you can go

on living a relatively normal life after having an esophagectomy.

It doesn’t seem like it would be too much different from having a myotomy in the sense that you have to rely on gravity and

water to get the food down…but it would be the recovery that would be

difficult to deal with, however that goes along with most invasive surgeries.

Well, whatever

decision you make, I’m sure it will be the right one for you…And hopefully,

like said, if you have a helpful and considerate husband, that would be

really, truly wonderful!

Wish we could all be

there for you too to give you those hugs in person!

Take Care,

Sandi
