-- I'm back!!!! And coughing

I was a pretty active member of this group about 2 years ago, then had a dilation and everything was going well. Lately I've started violent coughing some evenings after eating, which I'm pretty sure is related to my achalasia. When I've looked up symptoms, I read that coughing, especially while lying down, is common. I'm not lying down!Does anyone else have this, and have you found anything to stop the coughing and gagging?

I guess you have aspiration, i.e., food that cannot go to the stomach,

goes in the trachea instead. That causes the coughing. If you lay down

the probability that food goes the wrong way is higher, but it is not

a necessary condition for aspiration.

So, besides another treatment that opens your stomach, what you can do

is to eat slower and to eat several small meals instead of one big.

Hi Polyanak,

The condition actually became apparant for me in nighttime coughing.

I try not to eat for several hour before lying down. I drink little

at night too. I sleep with three pillows. I often sleep on the couch

which has a slanted edge for an arm. this clears everything up. You

have food sticking in your esophagus all night. try washing it down

with lots of warm water immediately after you eat. A cup of hot tea

an hour or so before bedtime sometimes helps too.

Jan, first I want to say I am sorry I am so late in answering you.

The post are coming into me all out of sequence and some are

very much delayed.

I did have terrible coughing the first few months after this disease

reared it ugly head. I really think fluid and even particles of food

are getting into the lungs and that is the way your body tries to get it

out. I know it was terrible for me, especially waking up at night with

it but also after eating, etc.

I hope it will leave you soon.

Hugs,

Maggie
