Guest guest
Thank you all for the warm welcomes. The advice has made me feel much better about being hesitant to jump into surgery. About me: Well first of all, I'm 29 years old and from New York City. (go Yankees!) I was diagnosed about 3 weeks ago. Since I had read about achalasia a year ago, when the doctor first mentioned that it was a possibility, my heart went into my throat and I knew it in I must say, I don't think my case of achalasia is extremely severe. I've noticed people posting about 'spasms' which I don't think I've ever had. I have difficulty swallowing both solids and liquids and need to carry water around with me always. This has been going of for about 2 years, that I'm consciously aware of. At first I thought I was just eating too fast. I randomly get a pain in my chest that can only be relieved by drinking some water. That is a symptom I've had for quite a number of years and only now am I thinking that it must've been the onset of achalasia. I also have the choking problem at night...some nights are worse than others. The surgical doctor that was recommended to me is supposed to be the best in NY Hospital. And the dialation specialist is supposed to have years of experience with this. (Keep in mind, I'm still learning the lingo). I don't know much about the surgery. Just that it's laparoscopically done. I don't know what they actually cut. And the thought of doing something permanent doesn't sit well with me. I've considered looking into some 'alternative' therapies, such as Reiki and meditations. Some people believe in that stuff and I'm desperate enough to look into it. Well, I'm just beginning my journey and I appreciate any advice anyone wants to give me. I'm sure I'll be asking questions. Thanks again. ~
Guest guest
, I'm new to the group also, but I've been reading a lot of beneficial information and have learned a lot. I've been suffering with this ailment for at least four years and have had two Botox injections, which gave me mild relief. I'm also from New York and am looking for a doctor with a lot of experience with Achalasia. My doctor seems to feel that the only solution is surgery and I would want another opinion first. At this point, I am swallowing just about anything but with difficulty. I can feel everything go down my esophagus as if I had taken too large a bite. Sometimes, the food gets stuck and I have to drink water to help it go down. Eating is really a chore. If you know of any good doctors in NY, I'd appreciate it. Thank you all for the warm welcomes. Guest guest
- just so you know, there are no rules here about not posting doctor names, and it's actually something we do quite regularly -- we even have a database set up for people to list doctors. I hope you can find someone else to talk to about your treatment, so that you can make the choice that's best for you!Debbi wrote: I don't know the rules about mentioning or recommending doctors in this group, but if you know someone really good in the NYC area, please e-mail it to me personally. Guest guest
, I think you are gone right now. In your absence your office computer or someone spoofing your address continues to send at least one worm attachment per day. My system is blocking them and I hope all the listserve members are successfully blocking them, too. Some have been password protected others just attachments without passwords. Unless your antivirus and Outlook or Outlook Express is completely up to date --- DO NOT OPEN AN ATTACHMENT FROM DR. FREEMAN. Keep correspondence professional; the purpose of the listserve is to foster communication and collegiality. No personal attacks on listserve members will be tolerated.2. Always sign your e-mails with your first and last name.3. The listserve is not secure; your e-mail could end up anywhere. However, it is against the rules of the listserve to copy, print, forward, or otherwise distribute correspondence written by another member without his or her consent, unless all personal identifiers have been removed.
