,

I read the old post. Wow. I am glad that things

are going okay with you now.

Esophagectomy

Hi ,

In my case they did what they call a gastric pull up where they

bring the stomach up and attach it to the remainder of the esophagus that is

not diseased. In some cases they can use a part of the large intestine as

a replacement for the esophagus, in my case I was affected by diverticula in

the large intestine. I would point out that this was done as a last

resort after close to 50 years with this disease. My esophagus had

collapsed in on it self and there was no other option.

I think

someone pointed out that you can do a search on the achalasia page using

(search archive). I posted my story in Aug. of 2001 you can see it if you

interested the message number is 1413. Use the Msg. # box in the middle top part of the

page.

Question, how can they remove an esophagus and a person live

without one? I didn’t know it was possible.

I do hope you are feeling better.

Ann, I am so sorry that you are now facing an esophagectomy.

I have not had this surgery but I know several here have had

it and are doing well.

I can understand the lung infections. That was one of my

biggest problems in the beginning and kept the lung infection

for a long time. I also had aspiration pneumonia. I finally

got rid of the lung infection when I had cellulitis, a form of

staph infection and they put me on a very high dose of antibiotics for 2

weeks. Prior to that I was taking breathing treatments 4 times a day just to

keep breathing.

You have my thoughts and prayers as you move forward.

Hugs

Maggie,

Alabama

Hi all, I finally have made up my mind to go back to my surgeon in

Dallas this coming Monday. I have had 3 myotomy surgeries, none seem

to have helped. I was diagnosed with achalasia July, 2003. I seem

to

be continuely sick and not getting better. My local family doc

thinks

I have a chronic lung infection. I have been in and out of the

hospital many times with lung stuff, aspiration pheumonia, bronchitis,

etc. I am scared to death of the thought of the esophageus removal

surgery, at least they will remove the diseased part. I need

support. Anyone out there have this done.

Blessings, Ann

Ann,

I am a member of the board but don't have achalasia. I had a partial

esophagectomy last August, and it is a tough operation, no doubt about it. But

afterwards, you can go on and live a near close to normal life. It's much better

than what you're going through now.

Anytime you have any questions, fire away.

Thank you to all who have replied to my post. Yes this has been a

very agonizing decision, one that I have wrestled with for months.

I know that I just can't keep going the way I am. I am tired of

being sick. I know my immune system is getting more and more

compromised because of the disease. There is alot I do not know.

Like ICU, how long, feeding tube, yes or no?? How long will I be in

the hospital? I think my surgeon can do this lappy, which should be

good for me. I want to know how much PAIN will I be in. My family

doc keeps telling me to not let the issue of pain be a factor they

can give me pain meds to keep the pain level down. That is a huge

fear I have. My husband will go with me and stay at the hospital

with me but I don't know how long that will be. What I want to know

if I understand right is that they will remove the diseased part of

my esophagus and attach my stomach to it. Well I think I also read

that they will cut away some of my stomach, right? Is it kind of

like a stomach reduction surgery??

This is only the start of my questions and will probably have more.

Blessings and Thanks, Ann
