Hi, I have had A for 27 years, but only diagnosed four years ago. No I have not had surgery, as I was too far gone when they finally told me what the problems had been. I had the pain, unbearable pain, the regurgitation, inability to swallow, all of the things everyone talks about, but - I no longer have them as I have controlled them with not eating "problem" foods, etc. but most of all, drinking a sip of carbonated beverage before every bite of food. As my doctor told me, it triggers the esophagus to open so the food will go down. When I have been "blocked" I used it to "bubble up" the congestion in my throat. The greater portion of my esophagus is "closed". As I no longer have the pain, I decided to forgo surgery unless the A gets worse. Of course, I was told I HAD to have surgery, and even interviewed three doctors, but as I have been able to eat with coke, 7-up, etc. etc. I will not have surgery unless it no longer works. I have had two endoscopy's plus other tests. Reply to Marilyn in Los Angeles if you wish. Best to you.
