Guest guest
Hi Ron. I had an ulcer in 1982 and was on a host of meds until my myotomy in 1984. I believe that the after-surgery diet cured the ulcer. I haven't had one since. Whenever I feel a little burning or acid-like sensations in my stomach, I start drinking aloe vera juice every morning on an empty stomach. It takes about a week to notice the benefits. Of cource, there are some foods that don't do well in the stomach at all and can be contributing to the ulcer formation. I keep away from processed foods, white flour, sugar, and cured meats. I hope you ulcer takes a hike! It's no fun! in Oregon
Guest guest
I wish you all the best Ron. I'm sure your doctor will have no problem with the aloe vera juice. If you have access to a Naturopath, you will be well on your way to feeling better. The "A" will be staying with us for a while, but all the other STUFF does not need to... especially if it's in our power to change it. That's what is so frustrating about this disease. No cure. Sure we can manage it, have procedures, have surgery, but never have we heard: WE'VE FOUND A CURE. On the ulcers et cetera, we have the power to help ourselves by changing what and when we eat and drink. Heart disease, diabetes, stroke and the like are caused by what we eat. Heart disease is the number one killer of America. ... Did you hear about the lawsuit against Mc's?? They are saying that Mcs have contributed to the "fattening" up of the American people and beyond. The fast foods concept was a good one in the beginning, but then it took on a twist to meet the taste buds of us all... and while we have the power to say no, we don't have the will-power. Which now 'they' are saying is similar to the tobacco industry: Made a product that is injurious to the health and well being of all who use it. Don't get me started. I'll shut up about that. in Oregon
Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone has gotten an ulcer while dealing with A? I suffered from a peptic ulcer earlier this year and have been wondering if there is a connection. Any thoughts would be appreciated.RonNew York Ron, I've never had any stomach pains or anything, but when I went in for a BoTox injection this May, they did a complete scope of my stomach and duodenum (I go to a teaching hospital, so they always turn every scope into an opportunity to gain experience). I was SOOOO surprised to learn that I had a small duodenal ulcer! I had never had any pains... but then (after talking to a friend who has had ulcers all her life as a result of steroid medications for her asthma) I found out that HUNGER can actually be a sign of an ulcer. THIS made sense to me -- I would often be hungry just half an hour after eating a full meal, and it made NO sense to me! Now, I think that all my gastro-nerves are totally FUBAR as either a cause or side effect of almost a decade of A, and instead of sending me "ouch" signals from the ulcer area, they sent "hungry" ones to my brain instead. When it was first discovered (I tested negative for H. Pylori bactieria, BTW), my doctor (family doc, not my GI) put me on Prevacid 30mg for 90 days to allow the ulcer to heal. During that time, I noticed a decrease in "hunger after a meal", which I took to mean that the proton pump inhibitor was doing its job. But after the 90 days ran out, I started noticing acid in my esophagus, particularly in the evenings. Again, I NEVER had any "heartburn" pain, but if I bent over and my esophagus contents washed into my mouth (it's so nice to be able to say that to people who understand and don't get grossed out by it), or if I had to gurge my food, I would get a mouthful of acid. Shortly after that, I noticed that I had the constant hunger feelings again. My doc put me on 15mg of Prevacid -- he said the insurance companies don't like to put you on 30mg for more than 90 days for "healing" and then 15mg afterwards for "maintenance" (b/c it's cheaper that way, of course!). Even on the 15mg, I still have the hunger and the acid in my eso in the evenings. I now have an appt. with a local GI (my GI at the university is 1.5 hours away -- NOT convenient for a woman with a full-time job, a toddler son, and a husband who travels a lot on business). It took six weeks to get an appt, but I will finally see her next week. I'm assuming she'll want to schedule a scope to see if the ulcer is back (I was told that scoping is the only good way of finding out if there's an ulcer). I also assume she'll want to scope me just to get a look at my LES -- I'm a bit of a freak show, I imagine, and she won't be able to resist the opportunity to get a gander at something like that! I'm hoping she'll be able to get me in before the end of the year for the scope. We're taking our son on a Caribbean cruise in late January, and I'd like to get that part of my digestive system "fixed" before we go!Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Awful! The only thing I have ever tasted that came close to being that bad, though different, was Cambodian fish head sauce. ;-) notan
Guest guest
Ron, did you have to bring up castor oil? Oh yes, I remember the orange juice too. I think that is why oranges are my least favorite fruit today. I promised that if ever I was old enough to control what I took I would never take it again. Well, I did "just once." Do you suppose this is what gave us Achalasia? LOL. (Hey, only kidding folks.) But, I must have missed something here. How is Aloe Vera suppose to be good for Achalasia? Guest guest
Hey Ron, et al. I did not realize Aloe Vera Juice is an acquired taste! LOL. I found it to be quite refreshing. I would drink about 8 ounces in the morning and another before bed. On an empty stomach was best... as if? LOL. I had heard the virtues of the Juice several years ago. Then while trying the Atkins diet, I developed a bad stomach ache. (Too much protein, I'm sure). So, I started drinking it again. And after a few days...less than a week, the symptoms were gone. I also stopped the protein only diet. I didn't only wanted to lose 20 lbs, ... didn't lose it that way. (By the way, I'm not overweight, really, it's just that after my hysterectomy, I got heavy in a real short period of time. Now after 2 yrs, the extra weight is long gone). Guest guest
Hey JC... I hope your doctor also told you about the intestinal issues with fresh cabbage juice. Are you gonna drink it straight?? Are you gonna drink it mixed with carrot juice?? I've been juicing vegetables and fruits since 1978. That is were I found my nutrients. And, of course, when "A" is overly active, liquids were a challenge. I'm still drinking carrot juice most mornings. I'll mix with beet, celery, spinach, cabbage, cucumber, etc to get the desires enzymes, vitamins and minerals I need. If you don't already have one, the JuiceMan makes a real good juicer. The Champion is considered top of the line here in the States. Oster makes a good second. These two are quite pricey. Juice Man is more affordable. Happy Juicing, and good luck in Oregon
Guest guest
, Like you I have been juicing for years. I don't drink cabbage juice straight. I usually mix it with other things as you said below. One thing I can't stomach is fresh tomatoes juice. If people have acid issues they should stay away. I mix cabbage and carrot juice. The best juicer our there is a Braun. It's cheap and it has the same motor in as the Juiceman, but for way less money!! It's like 65.00 I think. JC -----Original Message-----From: kathiode@...
