Guest guest
> CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT PROEFA IS ? What is ProEFA?!! Hey group, it's been what, 2 weeks since we've answered this? Here is some old, new, borrowed, and 'blue' (Dr. Stoll's book on depression) Again please know that you can search the archives at I was on the net for awhile because I was lurking on the professional chat for apraxia at http://www.speechpatholgist.org that Marilyn Agin MD SLP and Lori Roth MA CCC/SLP both hosted tonight, so I had time to search... there will be more professional, as well as parent chats coming up! Hi everyone, For those of you who (still) want more information on what ProEFA or Omega 3/Omega 6 or essential fatty acids (EFA)are, in addition to The LCP Solution by Dr. Stordy and Malcolm Nicholl, you can also buy The Omega-3 Connection: The Groundbreaking Anti-depression Diet and Brain Program book which is written by one of CHERAB's board members, L. Stoll, M.D., Director of the Psycho-pharmacology Research Laboratory at Harvard's McLean Hospital: " For years scientists have searched for a " magic bullet " to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- safe enough for nursing mothers, children with ADHD, and the elderly, without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Now the search may finally be over, thanks to the Omega-3 Renewal Plan, introduced here by L. Stoll, M.D., Director of the Psycho-pharmacology Research Laboratory at Harvard's McLean Hospital. In his groundbreaking research, Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, play a crucial role in mental health -- regulating and en-hancing mood, sharpening memory, and even aiding concentration and learning. And these remarkable substances, so essential to our health, are found abundantly in common fish oils and other sources. The bad news is that even though omega-3 fatty acids have played a critical role in our evolutionary past, these extraordinary substances have been depleted by our Western diet and lifestyle, and the resulting nutritional imbalance seems to have led to a sharp rise in heart disease and depression. By contrast, in Japan and other countries where fish consumption is high, both heart disease and depression rates are low. Stoll explains how easily omega-3s can be used up in just a few generations, and how a new mother with depleted omega-3s loses still more to her baby -- a fact that may account for the severe postpartum depression so many women suffer. He documents evidence that a shortage of omega-3s may also play a role in attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other learning problems. The good news is that this downward spiral of depletion and depression can finally be reversed. In his revolutionary Omega-3 Renewal Plan, Dr. Stoll presents readers for the first time with all the tools for restoring their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including which foods to eat and how to choose the most effective over-the-counter supplements. Featuring information on how to integrate flaxseed and fish oils into diet and medication plans, and including simple recipes as well as supplement dosages and sources, The Omega-3 Connection offers an entirely new, practical method for improving mental health. " CHERAB Foundation researched various EFA companies and chose Nordic Naturals to begin research with based on the fact that their products are third person tested for purity, and because leading experts in the field of research in EFA (Dr. Stordy- " The LCP Solution " author, Dr. Kane - Body Bio, and Stoll MD of Harvard, author of The Omega 3 Connection, and a board member to CHERAB) either use or recommend Nordic Natural's products. And yet one more credential to Nordic Naturals, Dr. Katz, another board member of CHERAB, who worked with the NIH (http://www.nih.gov) for over 15 years and now runs the Research Institute for Omega 3 research, just contacted Michele the owner of Nordic Naturals in regards to working together on the EFA research. Nordic Naturals, and some other companies offered to work with CHERAB Foundation for our feedback research, but for the reasons stated, we chose to work with only one right now, Nordic Naturals. The products from Nordic Naturals (ProEFA) we believe best for apraxic children can be purchased at http://shopinserviceinc.goemerchant2.com/ ... 1. ProEFA, and DHA Jr. or most fish oil food supplements are just that, fish oil. They are not drugs. (I know that my grandmother, my mother, and me and my brother and sister, and many others were given cod liver oil as children.) 2. If you are wondering about the taste of various EFA products, some mentioned coromega for example, know that any of you can get a free sample of coromega by just going to their website, just like any of you can go to GNC to purchase Efalex. Some children may like coromega, obviously most of the parents who speak to Michele have children that didn't like it at all. Michele said that the company that makes coromega is a reputable company, so their products probably are pure, but coromega has a lot more omega 3 than omega 6 and we are finding the greatest success with the mixture of the two. ProEFA is a mixture of the two, omega 3 and omega 6. The Borage oil has the GLA which is the omega 6. ProEFA is liked by many children, and many will just eat it from a spoon, or chew the capsule since borage oil is naturally sweet. (I can testify that my son Tanner thinks it's sweet, and he hated to take the efalex. I can also say that ProEFA does not smell like some of the other ones we've used, like Efalex. Tanner will now eat ProEFA right off the spoon and he likes it! After a year and a half of him hiding behind the couch when it was time to take other fish oils, this is amazing even without all the great breakthroughs he's had!) 3. Review the medical research yourself instead of believing " I've heard " " facts. " 4. Pollution and Mercury are a concern with fish and fish oil capsules. You shouldn't feed your young child large quantities of fish right now unless you know that the fish are from unpolluted waters and free of PCB and mercury. The same goes for some of the other companies some of you have tried that Michele didn't know about, please check to make sure that the EFA products you supplement your child with are from a reputable company that has third person testing for purity of any metals, (mercury) PCBs etc. If you don't know why, please visit http://www.apraxia.cc and click on the index and then look for the FDA 20/20 report on mercury. This is why supplementation with fish oils from companies with products third person tested for purity may actually be better now than eating the fish and other foods that would produce the same results. But for those skeptical over supplementation, in theory yes, if you were to get all the correct nutrients into the child, it would be the same as supplementation with fish oil capsules. (Again, any food sold in a capsule is a food supplement, not a drug.) ProEFA is brand new, and it's in the doctors line, which is the original line of Nordic Naturals, it's not an " old " line or product. Yes in the commercial line, which is not the professional line, The Complete Omega has the same ingredients as ProEFA, but the following is why our nonprofit decided to go with the ProEFA instead for our research. (Please know that we could at any time include The Complete Omega, but I believe when you read below you will see why we chose not to at this time) All product costs are set by Nordic Naturals.... There are only 60 capsules in The Complete Omega, and the recommended dosage is 2 capsules a day. Therefore, with 60 capsules per bottle, the 30 day supply cost is $14.95 There are 90 capsules in ProEFA, and the recommended dosage is 1 capsule a day. Therefore, with 90 capsules per bottle, the 90 day supply cost is $17.95 So cost wise, you have the choice to receive... a 90 day supply for $17.95 plus shipping with ProEFA (or .20 cents per day) http://shopinserviceinc.goemerchant2.com/ or, a 30 day supply for $14.95 plus shipping with The Complete Omega (or .50 cents per day) www.nordicnaturals.com (Through our website http://www.apraxia.cc , all products price includes ship cost, and all products are sent out Priority Mail in the US for $3.50 and for the same ship cost are shipped out internationally as well. Since we are doing feedback research which is being shared by ALL of the leading medical, professional, and clinical experts in this area of Omega 3 research, any products received that are not through our nonprofit are NOT part of the study. Since we are seeing such amazing results, this is something that will perhaps be proven to help many more children in the future. Even though results are typically within one to three weeks, if someone is involved in research, they may NOT see results in 30 days, and then assume that the fish oil is not working. The product may have worked within 6 weeks, or 7 weeks, but that parent would assume " it doesn't work " and would never know. With a 90 day supply, it gives a full 3 months for the product to work, which is the amount of time Efamol stated it could take for Efalex to work when it manufactured it. In addition to reading The LCP Solution, or Stoll MD's book on EFA research, ...know that there are professional sources to turn to for questions when you read possible inaccuracies on any grouplists: enjoy! Guest guest
I am still confused by the ProEFA dosing. When I read LCP Solution, it said that kids under five should get 240 mg of DHA a day, but it seems that everyone is recommending just one ProEFA capsule. My first bottle came today and I gave my two year old (27 lbs) two capsules. I am a little nervous, but in reading the bottle, it doesn't seem that he is going to suffer any ill effects from my having done this once. What is the correct dose? I am also confused by the study. If I started him today (he was on DHA Jr. for the past two weeks with no change) on ProEFA, will he be eligible for the study or not? Some places it sounds like yes, some places no. Finally, I am in the Twin Cities. My own doctor will not return my phone calls about this. I have to believe the University of Minnesota hospitals must have someone who knows about this (the study). Do you know how I could find out if there is a doctor here, or maybe at the Mayo Clinic will whom we could work? My speech therapist is on board, but it sounds like if you want your results to count, you have to have a medical doctor involved. Thanks , you're a Godsend! Guest guest
Tracie, Our pediatrician told us to increase doseage to two capsules per day. My daughter is 32mths and she weighs 19lbs and she said that the two capsules would not give her any ill effects. Hannah >I am still confused by the ProEFA dosing. Guest guest
> COuld you please tell me where you are getting the Pro EFA form. I have > spent hours on the Nordic Naturals and Heritage Health website and cannot > find this product. Thanks You can order it from the www.apraxia.cc website. It is a professional product that isn't even available at health food stores, or so I've heard. I ordered it late on a Friday night and it arrived Monday morning. When I ordered DHA from NN previously, it took almost 14 days to get to me!
Guest guest
No Brad, That is not what this support group is about. In the 10-11 years that we've had this forum, I dont ever remember any flame throwing, bashing fighting, etc (somebody can correct me if I'm wrong here cuz I might have missed something)....Humor is aloud but all in good taste. I even thought there was really nothing wrong with 's comment. He was just trying to crack a joke & it's true, , you shouldn't be sticking your finger in your ear in the first place. You're probably hitting your facial nerve if you're getting that tingling in the tongue. I've had my ear canal widened as well and I watch 2 little four year olds. Well, one day the little boy decided he was going to shove his fingers WAY into my ears, you betcha....I had all kinds of tingly going on my tongue. Happens all the time when I go to my ENT for ear cleanings. If he hits the facial nerve, I get the tingly in the tongue. My advice would be to go see your ear specialist that you have & let him know what is going on. Please let us know what happens & has apologized, so let bygones be bygones.
