Survey Questions:

1. Name:

Wierda

2. Location:

Muskegon, MI

3: Age you developed achalasia:

30

4. Age you are today:

39

5. Your main treating doctor and current medical care:

Doctor Nostrant at the University of Michigan ( on the other side of

the state)

I only see him when I need a balloon dilatation.

6. How happy are you with your doctor and current medical care:

I have not had a problem with my doctor. When I have been at U of M I was

treated very well.

7. What standard treatments they have had and their outcome:

I have had 3 balloon dilatations. My other options were botox injections or

Myotomy. My doctor doesn't

perform the Myotomy. I would have had to go to another doctor at U of M. I

have had very good luck

with the balloon dilatation.

8. What alternative treatments they have had and their outcome:

I have tried nitro for spasms but that only works for a very short time then

the pain comes back. My doctor

told me there was nothing they could do for it. I contacted my family

doctor today and he prescribed Levsin.

I am going to give that a try.

9. Something that they are grateful for:

My husband and my daughter.

Hello, ! Well, here I go.

1. Alan Laviolette

2. Detroit, Michigan

3. 34

4. 36

5. Dr. Lawrence Damiani, Garden City, Michigan

6. Above average doctor. Knowledgeable and supportive.

7. Two dilatations, lasted only a few months. Took Nitrostat and increasingly large doses of Nifedipine (Pro-Cardia) until both drugs started to lose their effectiveness. Had the myotomy in Nov. of 2000. I now have near normal swallowing with very little reflux.

8. No alternative treatments tried. Except for Carol's coke syrup which actually worked well-sometimes. :)

9. Very thankful that my disease is not life threatening and that it has led me to be a more sensitive person.

Great idea, . If you are ever in Michigan, look me up. I could use a date with an intelligent female who understands why it takes an hour to eat a meal!

1. Name: a

3. Developed achalasia about age 16.

4. I'm now 49.

5. My gastroenterologist is Dr. Mohammed Bawani in Libertyville,

IL. I haven't settled on a surgeon in this area, if I need one.

6. I am not really happy with the current situation because Dr.

Bawani said I needed another myotomy, but the surgeon I saw thinks

it's premature and I should try the balloon first, assuming my

problem is scar tissue. It's hard to know who is right.

7. I had a balloon dilitation, then a myotomy in 1971, another

balloon diliation in 1981, 4 botox injections over the last 3 years,

and am now considering whether to have another ballooning or a

myotomy, since the botox is not logner working. Had some medications

at the beginning before I was really diagnosed properly, but now just

take Prevacid for reflux.

8. I guess I haven't tried any " alternative " treatments.

9. I'm thankful that I have never been totally kept from eating,

have a supportive husband and mother, and two kinds of blenders and a

food processor!

Plenty of advice he doesn't know. At the time 1999 had not performed laporascopic myotomy. 7. What standard treatments they have had and their outcome Three dilatations at 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 cm over a 12 month period - nothing for the past 18 months.(briefly).8. What alternative treatments they have had and their outcome None (briefly).9. Something that they are greatful for (a happy note to end our survey)Above all this group, which has greatly reduced anxiety and enabled me to shelve any ideas of having the surgery.

I am managing well, can eat almost anything, and as long as I don't eat quickly or try for way too much I have no problems. A long drink of tea prior to bedtime helps to relieve problems of regurgitation at night. Extra pillows are essential (3 in all). A packet of crisps (chips) relieves any pain in the oesophagus region especially during the day.

Older details are in

achalasia/message/135

Keep up the good work

Dr. Lawrence Coffin, Burlington, VT (Thoracic Surgeon...1984

Dr. Krishan Gulati, Plattsburgh, NY (Thoracic Surgeon...1994

6. Dr. Ludewig...Wonderful, don't know where I'd be today

Dr. Hazan...Manometry specialist, still new to me but she seems to

have a different take on this so I'm giving her a try.

Drs. Coffin and Gulati...Both excellent surgeons, one with

compassion/understanding, the other - well excellent surgeon is the

important part.

7. 1983-84...Manometry, 2 Bougie dilatations, 2 Balloon dilatations,

Myotomy

1992-93...Repeat manometry, additional balloon dilatations

1994...Myotomy

2000-01...Balloon dilatations (2-3?), manometry(next week),

considering possible botox injections

Along the way numerous endoscopy procedures and meds out the

gazoo: Nitro (seldom effective), Nifedipine/Procardia (doesn't work),

Bentyl (doesn't work), Valium (no longer effective for spasms but

makes me drowsy and I can get sleep/rest), Amitriptyline

(bedtime and induces heavy sleep), Tagamet (good antacid), a few

others I only know the generic name for, and many I can't remember. I

am currently taking no meds until I return to Dr. Hazan following

manometry test next week.

8. Alternative treatments: Lots and lots of TLC from husband and

children. Outside of #7 above, that's it.

9. I am grateful for one step and one day at a time. For the wealth

of love and understanding I receive from my family. A husband who has

never waivered and sleeps on a tilt with a smile and children who

think of things like " make scrambled eggs for Mom because they go down

easier " .

7. I have had one balloon dilation, nearly a year ago. I began

redeveloping symptoms within a month, gradually worsening. I'm still

much heavier then before my dilation (only because I now have tips to

get more food down) , but it's only a matter of time.

8. No other treatment

9. I am greatful that I don't have to diet anymore, and know that

I'll eventually get thinner without trying. I can eat my chocolate

guilt free, as it is one of the easiest foods for me to eat.

I am greatful that at least some of my friends believe that my

condition is a physical one, not an alternate name for bulimia.

5. My gastoenterologist is Dr. Feuer, who I'm not happy with

although he was aggressive with getting the testing complete. My

surgeon is Dr. Rosemurgy in Tampa.

6. I don't have any current medical care to be unsatisfied about yet

7. I just had my first Heller's myotomy 3 days ago. Still on a

liquid diet but so far so goo

8. No other treatment

9. I am greatful to have a disease with a name, that is treatable.

I am grateful it isn't cancer. I am grateful that there are doctors

(although FEW!) who are spending their careers trying to figure this

horrible disease out. I am thankful that I have a loving God who

will never give me more than I can handle. I am thankful that this

disease struck me instead of one of my three children.
