Guest guest
Hi everyone, I just recieved my sons written report from the SLP who gave him the verbal apraxia dx. I am a bit confused on this part and since I won't be going back there for his therapy (due to driving distance and found closer SLP to do ST) and I won't be seeing his new SLP until he has his first therapy appt on March 19th, I was wondering if any of you might be able to help me to understand some of it. The main things I am confused about are the scores he was given, as she did not explain what the scores would mean when she assessed him. here it is: Language comprehension: The Preschool Language Scale-3 (PLS-3) is administered. Tyler earns a standard score of 101 (M=100, SD=15), which is equivalent to the 53rd percentile. He demonstrates the ability to understand pronouns, recognize action in pictures, and undersand quantity concepts. He does not demontrate an understanding of the use of objects (e.g., " show me what we use to cut paper. " ), descriptives (e.g., " wet, little " ), or part-whole relationships (e.g., " show me the tail of the horse. " ). Language expression: On the PLS-3, Tyler earns a standard score of 74 (M=100, SD=15) which is equivalent to the 4th percentile. He has a vocabulary of 8 words, initiates social routines, and uses a question inflection. Tyler does not demonstrate the ability to name objects, produce successive one-word utterances, or use pronouns. Tyler primarily communicates through grunting and pointing, and he occasionally uses real words. He has learned ASL to express the following: jice, milk, water, please, thanks, shoes, play, cookies, candy, banana, sleep, please. Oral-Motor: Tyler is able to imitate simple oral motor movements to prodtude, elebate, depress, and lateralize his tongue. He is a very picky eater and prefers soft foods. He eats some cookies and crackers, but he never eats chewy foods. He has an allergy to walnuts, also. Reportedly, Tyler often drools, but did not drool during the evaluation. However, he frequently puts his hand in his mouth. Diagnostic Impressions: Moderate expressive language impairment secondary to verbal apraxia of speech (ICD-9 784.5) The things I didn't fully understand were the scores and the percentiles are based on and what they mean... and also, if someone could tell me if that ICD-9 code will work well for our insurance company, that would be great. I tried to look up the ICD code, but couldn't find it listed anywhere or in the archives. Thanks in advance!! Hope everyone is doing well! Kari B.
