Guest guest
Hi, I posted this question on another listserv and got an overwhelming response, over 30 people responded within 24 hrs. I want to know how many of you had gestational diabetes and have an apraxic child. I have a hypothesis and have reviewed it with other professionals . I am wondering if the gestational diabetes is vasoconstricting the blood supply to the infant while in utero causing an anoxic injury, cell death, ? lesions. I asked a researcher in London and nobody has done research on the two. I also asked The Joslin Clinic. I have a son with oral apraxia and I am also a nurse on the traumatic brain injury unit at Spaulding. I am studing neuropsychology and am in the process of researching this. Please email me at home. Thanks, Toni age 4 oral apraxia and doing great in therapy!
Guest guest
Hi Toni i did not have any type of diabetes while pregnant or otherwise. I feel at this point I personally feel it is impossible to find a link to anything. My son was a preemie, so naturally i was curious on that. Funny, I did not drink, smoke, dye my hair, get my nails done, drink caffeine etc...during my pregnancy. it was my 1st and I was overly cautious. With my 2nd I was more leanient and everything worked out smoother. Guess you never know...good luck with the research
Guest guest
Hi Toni, I have a 3 yr old son diagnosed with apraxia at at 24 months. I did have gestational diabetes while carrying him. I have four other children that I did not develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy and none of them have had any speech delays. I also had break through bleeding during my pregnancy with Corey on four seperate occasions. We thought we were going to lose him. I would be very interested to hear what others are saying about this. Thanks for your research, I sure hope we have some answers some day. Guest guest
Hi Toni! I just wanted to respond to your ? of gestational diabetes. No I did not have gestational diabetes. My son , has apraxia. He is 5 years old now, and has been in therapy since he was 2. As far as my pregancy goes, the only thing I can think of was that I seemed to catch every cold and flu bug. I was under more stress with than with my oldest who does not have apraxia. I hope this helps. Good luck! Thanks, Tammy

Guest guest
Hi Toni, I have a 34-month old daughter diagnosed with verbal apraxia (in therapy and doing remarkably well). I did not have gestational diabetes during pregnancy. I had no complications with the pregnancy or delivery. She delivered naturally and on-time and weighed 9 pounds, 12 ounces (ouch). I was 39 when she was born and have heart rhythm problems, so my pregnancy was considered " high risk " and closely monitored by a perinatologist. Good luck with your research. Guest guest
I didn'r have GD, but I did have a HIGH stress pregnancy. Labor started at 20 weeks, which was stopped with brethine. And started back up at 30 weeks, Mag sulfate for a week and then labor was controlled (to under four contractions and hour( with a turbuteline pump. until that was stopped at 36 weeks and he was born with no complications evident at birth. Good luck with your research. Lyn Dunsavage Mom to Max 5.4 ? apraxia

Guest guest
no gestational diabetes. But I have low blood sugar which was more of a problem during pregancy. Even when eating a balanced diet to control it. I did have a rough labor. pushed for four and a half hours and ended up with a c-section. And have often wondering if waiting for the c-section was a mistake on my part. As I so wanted a natural delivery. Robyn
Guest guest
Hi Toni/Pam, and everyone: The answer is that POORLY MANAGED gestational diabetes (that is, late diagnosis, poor glucose monitoring, poor glucose control) predisposes to a whole series of complications due to the altered metabolic state of the fetus - stemming from its pancreas doing the work for two. As to causing fetal anoxia, that certainly can be a factor in this situation. The good news is that a properly managed pregnancy (on both sides: the proper OB care AND the mother following the recommended guidelines for management of her pregnancy) should not run into these problems, as treatment should be effective and proportional to the severity of the mother's condition - diet, then oral medicine, then insulin, then hospitalization, then delivery - if necessary. Guest guest
Hi Toni! My 3 year old son, was the easiest birth of all 3 of my sons. No complications and he was a vaginal delivery, 7 minutes, 3 pushes. My other two were much more complicated. Hope this helps, I know a bit about research and I wish you a lot of luck with it!
