I am a provider through the state waiver program. So, if you have the state

waiver I can get paid through that. But not medicaid insurance, like Kid

Care.

Doreen,

Good idea. My husband had found some work for a couple disabled adults

packing and cleaning up houses that were forclosed and taken over by a

bank. He supervised the kids. Since most things in the house they were

tossing out, the kids did not have to worry about breaking things.... They

earned some money too.

What I'd bear in mind for creating employment for teens & young adults:

Pay--Remember that on job applications, folks are expected to enter what their

hourly pay rate was for past jobs.  Too low or too high a pay rate will hurt

them.  If you pay around state or national minimum wage, it'll look fine.

(This pay can also help employees later qualify for SSDI.)

References--Who will be the boss?  For folks in this age range, getting a

reference is very valuable.  Don't let this go to waste.

Liability--Can the little business be sued by customers?  (Broken items,

mislabeled items)  Can the business be sued by the workers or guardians?  Your

staff, even if they are volunteers, might be protected by having a background

check or being bonded; talk to a lawyer about this.

Mindset--Treat this like a real employer with real employees.  Address any

employee behavior that other employers would not like, and you'll be truly

assisting these young people in obtaining and keeping their next job.

Preparation--When you have a business plan, chat with a few job coaching

agencies.  Ask them for feedback on your model.

Would you be a for-profit, or file for non-profit status?  Look into tax issues

before you launch.

Hi Amy,

I might have an interest in this program in the future. Right now, my son is 17,

so will qualify for school district services until age 22, and I don't have

home-based waiver funding or government funding at the present time.

On another issue, was reading Laurie Jerue's post, and I had an off the top of

my head idea for a business called " Pack it up " . The idea here is to offer

moving preparation services to families or offices relocating. This would be

particularly targeted to folks who don't want to pay the cost of having the

movers come in and do that, but may not have the time or willingness to do the

preparations totally on their own.

Any thoughts or comments on the feasibility and/or marketability of such a

service would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the input. These are all things I need to consider. I have

had an established business for about 10 years and do have insurance set in

place.... but there are alot of other things that need to be considered.

I appreciate your input !!! I am going to make a list and start targeting

what I have not already..
