I know of two individuals in the Naperville area. One is Laurie's own daughter

and her company Worker Girl. The other is Shredigator. I don't have their

number handy but can have them contact you.

shredding service needed

Does anyone out there have a shredding service (preferably one that is

owned/operated or benefits those with disabilities)? I am cleaning out 30

(yes I said 30) years of files that I want to shred. While my own

adult-disabled daughter would love to do this in her free time...I think I have

enough to keep her busy for 2 years straight! Hence, the thought of hiring one

of you who may have that business already for your young adult is more appealing

to me.

My son's transition program (District 99 in Downers Grove) has a shredding

business. Let me know if you'd like the contact information although one of his

teachers is on this listserve.

You can contact We Grow Dreams in West Chicago. They provide work training

services and jobs for those with disabilities. They don't receive any

government funding.

Their director is Laurie Staple, phone is 630-293-0100.

Actually, I meant to mention that I am planning on setting up a

shredding/recycling business with Noah in the Spring/Summer, so, if there is

more to be done, feel free to save us some boxes. We will most likely be doing

shredding on-site with a portable shredder...will keep everyone posted when we

are up and running...

Start saving stuff for us!

Hi Amy,

That's great that your district is willing to start a business for your

students. Do they get paid? How does that work? At a recent Naperville works

meeting we were talking to our district about the setting up a business in order

to be able to bid on city contract for things like shredding copying and

collating and they said they can't do that. So we started discussing

microenterprise with a few parents.

Seems like we should be able to put our " shreds " together so that opportunities

in our own communities don't pass by.

Hi,

Our Transition program has a few microbusinesses which includes shredding. Our

Vocational Coordiantor was vital in setting it up and worked with others who

have done this previously. Our District allowed us to set-up activity accounts,

similar to a school club. We do not pay students directly but we use the money

to pay for large portions of our annual overnight trip and other expense the

student might of had to pay for previously. For example our Holiday lunch. The

businesses are used for teaching vocational skills at a variety of independence

levels. We also have become part of two our local Chambers. This has generated

business as well as job training opportunities in the community.

Thanks,

Amy
