What these guys touch upon is the tactic that big pharmacy is now using and that is to hold their drug trials overseas were oversight is very suspect and wherein the drug company can gain FDA approval once lost or rejected due to previous adverse findings indicating that drug was unsafe or ineffective or both. Case in point how about that wonderful drug pulled from the market a few years ago Celebrex wherein British researches writing in the BMJ reported that the original American Study fraudulently mis-reported the studies data only using the first few months of data because it was favorable to the drug supposed non-GI complications. However when these British researchers looked at all the data they found absoluetly no evidence that Celebrex protected the stomach and GI tract which is what sales folk were telling doctors and the public. Is it just me or have you also notice a few TV commercials for this drug which was once pulled from the market by the FDA. Well these authors found 207 Celebrex trials in at least 36 different countries including, Estonia, Croatia, Lithuania, Costa Rica, Colombia, Russia, Mexico, China, Ukraine, and Brazil....many complications have been linked to Celebrex who's sales totaled $3.3 Billion in 2004!! Prescription drugs now kill right at 200,000 Americans every year take that Barrett! Part of true health care reform for Oregon and the nation includes improving patient satisfaction and safety who better than us to improve both to decrease the use of prescription drugs and as such reduce the incidence of "Adverse Drug Events." We have a real opportunity here in Oregon with the current Governor and legislature relative to true "health" care reform. One of the other keys to improving our health care system is to improve the health of Oregonians to get them into a state of optimum health "wellness" so they are less likely to get sick in the first darn place. Who better than us to facilitate health promotion and wellness to gain just that to "Improve the Health of a Defined Population" which is another leg of what is referred to as the "Triple Aim" of health care reform....this is where Dr. Chestnut's stuff plugs in wonderfully. Colleagues I'm here to tell you the "political stars and planets" are aligning in Salem like no other time in our history and that "Level Playing Field" we have all wanted is very much within our reach. If there were ever a time the profession needed you to add your financial shoulders to that "great stone wheel" we have been pushing up the mountain for some time and nearing the top, it would be now colleagues now is the time to finally step up and join your professional association the Oregon Chiropractic Association. Join today call the OCA office (503-256-1601) to get an application or call me today at 541-231-4528 and I'll fax you an application. Remember "Chiropractic Day at the Capitol" is Thursday Feb. 17 8:00 AM sharp! Room 350 (third floor) orientation first, then we go to our appointments with a big luncheon in the Galleria downstairs in the capitol building. This is a very positive event for the profession at the Capitol building and a lot of fun so mark your calendars. Those of you who have a relationship with your State Senator or Representative will be calling their offices and making your own appointments and then I need you to report to me your appointment time for my log book.
