increasing manding, part 2 ???

I have received some really good ideas on increasing manding of missing items.

We are working on those things now... BUT I would like to take this one step

further...

How do you increase manding (the shaping of questions child asks...) when you

are not staging an activity? Example: Mom is working on computer writing to

all the wonderful listers :) and Zachary comes into the computer room

and says " I want come here. "

(now, many many times Mom has gotten up and gone... then prompted from there...

which is working nicely... so to answer my own question... we need to practice

more...BUT...)

senero one:

The response Mom wants to shape:

Mom: what do you want?

Zach: I want " come here? "

Mom: Come here for what?

Zach: I want my letters.

Mom: Oh great, let's go get them. Show me where they are?

Senero two:

Mom is in a position where she can not " come here " right now. (She is cooking

in the kitchen or something of that nature.)

Zach is asking for something that he " stims " on, but that we have been using to

increase mands. (which is fine for him to use... with supervision, ie video,

spelling words, etc.) BUT it is a time that mom can not supervise (and yes,

mom has let him do these things unsupervised and what happends is... Zach get's

real stimmy while watching a video... tries to fast forward it, tries to see

scenery beyond the actual picture by putting his eyes up to the tv and looking

into the tv, jumping up and down and making strange verbal stimming noises.

Spelling words, writes the same video titles and phrases over and over

again....then jumps up and down and makes strange verbal stimming noises.)

The rule is he looses the video immediately when this happens or has to put

letters away. (But considering we are using these things more frequently to get

mands, I am at a lost in regards to what I should do.

I don't want him to not ask for what he wants but I do not want to tell him " no "

when he does ask. But allowing him to stim to an extreme, is out of the

question... When we do this, his compliance goes down, he is harder to redirect

during therapy hours and verbal stims increase.

Suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.
