Carol,

That was wonderful to see. She was so involved in that book.

Awesome. Is in a self contained classroom or is she

included. They keep using the Edmark program with in the

self contained classroom and she learns words, but I don't think she

knows why. It would be interesting to see her in a classroom during

a reading group so she could see that her peers are reading books.

She spends time in a first grade class and does very well in there,

and loves it but most of the time spent is not for very academic

times. We're working on it. You've got me thinking though. She

wants to be just like those kids in that classroom. Hmmmmm. If in

self contained classroom, do you feel she learns as much or more at

home and from your other children?

Bonnie -

My daughter (now 10) spent her entire 3rd grade year at home because our school district would not find a general education classroom for her. Her preschool years were spent in an inclusive classroom. Kindergarten was spent in a Developmental Kindergarten classroom with 3 autistic boys, 1 boy who simply had physical challenges and 1 little girl with dwarfism. I fought this and did not know at the time I could have taken it further. Her first and second grade years were spent isolated in the hallways with an aide one on one. A token 2 hours of inclusion which I found meant recess, lunch, p.e. I found out later that she did not even get music or library (her two favorite subjects). So her third grade year I spent filing complaints (state and federal), meeting with attorneys and just letting my daughter hang with me. (The plus of this year was that her self esteem skyrocketed from where she was. She had told me "Momma, I am broken, my brain doesn't work.") The amazing thing is that both state and federal agencies will not hold anyone accountable for a child missing an entire year of school. I had not pulled her out OR said I would be homeschooling her. If this was any other child, they would have been on it in an instant. This year she is finally at her "home" / neighborhood school, 4 hours in general education with 2 hours of pull out into special ed. (self contained) classroom. I am continuing my fight to have her in a Resource Room instead. YES, YES, YES. our children learn by watching their peers. If you would like to continue this conversation please feel free to ask more.

My daughter reads at a 1st grade level, knows the concept of numbers (adding/subtracting) and enjoys science and history. BUT they continue to have her do dot-to-dot for math and picture words for reading. Raising these children to their potention takes us aggressively working with them at home and FIGHTING for their right to a classroom of their peers and the curriculum being taught to their peers. (Adjusted to their ability level) They are NOT mentally behind in everything, they need to be challenged with all the details their peers are receiving.

How wonderful is that! Would it be ok if I show it to my son Matt's teacher so she can share it with other teachers and his classroom? It appears there are some 'people' at his school that don't believe me when I tell them that our chidren can read ALONE!!!Carol in IL <ps1272000@...> wrote:

Bonnie,The fact that she was so into the book is what thrilled me most too! It is the goal, after all. :-) Remember all the past debates on the lists- esp down'sheart and communicating partners over 'pushing academics' vs letting a kid be a kid or working on communication?? I have always maintained you can easily do BOTH and in fact a kid can be 'trained' to think that academics are fun! What's more fun then learning something new?! I think half the problems is adults view learning as WORK and pass that crummy attitude on to their kids. I know I tend to do that with math!! ;-) Prolly why she does so crummy in it.For us reading has opened the door to language and communication- same as ASL has allowed me to understand her, reading has helped her understand language and be a better

communicator. How did this happen? Its a combination of many different things- the over all attitude towards at home, the over all attitude in our home towards reading- books everywhere you look, she sees people reading all the time, the library is a favorite hang out, she has been read to LOTS, spend a lot of time working on words with her, both in a systematic way and making sure to point out words in her environment as we go through the day. I always have her read words she knows on menus, signs, billboards, directions for games, recipes, computer/computer games etc As for school, her reading instruction has always been one on one with the SPED teacher using the Pat O method for starters. They have always done it in the SPED room during 'center' time. She is also present when the gen ed teacher reads a book to the entire class ( and has been since kdgr ) and also 'free reading time' in the gen ed class. I

have to say our current SPED room teacher is truly fantastic! She has done so much work with all the kids regarding reading/words/vocabulary/language. We also have the best ST that ever walked the earth and besides doing one on one ST, she has a HUGE influence on both the gen ed and SPED rooms. Our SPED teacher makes the kids do lots of thinking of words ( and she doesn't accept the easy ones either- for example, when they were doing the letter 'B' anyone who said 'ball' was pooh poohed.. in a nice way, but she stretches them.) she has them do a lot of writing and last year she had them make their own flash cards complete with pictures. still matches her flash cards from last year. :-)Sorry my answer is so long- I really don't think a child learning to read happens from just one source. It really is a group effort. I do see this when I am at school- both in the gen and sped rooms. You can really tell which students

have involved parents and which don't. This is a podcast I just listened to the other night about learning to read. I totally disagree with her regarding her opinion of flash card use in the early years and honestly feel in kids with DS that it does help to 'hard wire' the brain for language skills since they are such visual learners and such poor auditory ones. They are finding that reading is not a natural skill in humans and that is there is no set neuro pathway for it!! It culls skills from all different areas of the brains and then each person's brain sets about coordinating them in different ways. Really fascinating stuff and actually makes me believe in teaching kids with DS to read EARLY even more! If neuro plasticity is a fact, and our kids are deficient in language skills. all the more reason to start 'inputting' that type of information early on to grow more connections for it. Picture/word flash cards

seem tailor made for that.http://tinyurl.com/2xp88w Carol in IL AIM doihavtasay1 GigaTribe doihavtasayMom to seven including , 7 with TOF, AVcanal, GERD, LS, Asthma, subglottal stenosis, and DS.My problem is not how I look. Thank you all for the kind remarks. If you think that video would help you prove kids with DS can read and would inspire teachers to work harder.... and I would be honored to have you use it!I also posted one of her cheer leading performances to youtube as well. I have a 15 day free trial for Divx ;-) Carol in IL AIM doihavtasay1
