transitioning to a big bed

My son is 3 and 3 mo., is still comfortable in his crib, he has

never tried to get out. Maybe it is because he is 34 lb. I figure that I

will leave him there a while longer even though his older brother moved out

when he was a bit over 2.

Stefanie was 21 months, new baby brother needed the crib. She did fine, they

slept in the same room. She would wake up, but quietly play with her toys

and then fall back asleep. Her transition bed was small, and low down (dad

made it for her) and she LOVED it! She did wander some, usually to our room,

requesting to sleep with us.

Nic is in a reg bed but we don't have it up on the frame. It's just the box and

mattress on the floor. He falls out every night so we are going to wait to put

up the frame. We tried those rail guards bu I found him one night with his head

stuck between it and the matress.

Just wondering when your children moved from the crib

to a regular bed. Nina is 2.5 but still sleeps in her

crib. She can climb out and that worries me so I am

thinking of moving her into something else. My other

kids moved into their beds at about this age - my son

was a little older, but I am afraid we will have

trouble keeping Nina in the bed.

I don't remember how old Bridge was when we let go of her crib. We put her in

a double bed on the floor (no frame). She was up against the wall and pillows

lined the other side of the bed. Because Bridget gets up and we don't hear her

for about 2 years now we have set a booby trap. We put 2 computerpaper box

tops, standing on end, in her doorway. Inside we stack wooden blocks. If she

gets up quietly, she has to knco them over and we hear her. Before we did that

I'd wake from a deep sleep and hear Barney in the background. We would find her

(sometimes asleep) on hte floor in front of the tv with a video on at 2 in the

morning.

We moved when she was 3. We first tried a toddler bed, and that

didn't work at all. It was so small, and so easy to get out of, she thought

it was a game. We bought a twin bed, made a big deal about a " big girl

bed " , and she did better with that. She still would get up some at night,

but not nearly as much, and eventually she rarely got out. We also stressed

the bed was for sleeping only. We make it up every morning (Okay, most

mornings), and she doesn't play in it. I think that helps signal that when

she gets into bed, she should go to sleep, and it isn't a place for play.

was climbing out of his crib. He was getting into things while we

were sleeping and I was worried about his safety. He was/is still so

small (2-3T clothes), so my cousin recommended a " crib tent " . It is made

similarly to a real tent, but the whole thing is made from a large-holed

mesh so you can see through it. It only goes on the top of the crib, so

the baby still has open sides. The front unzips like a tent, so you can

reach in and get the baby out easily. I found it at Babies R Us (a

sister store of Toys R Us) for about $60. It is the best $60 I ever

spent. We have had it for about 9 months now...He has recently figured

out how to unzip it now, but it takes A LOT of work for him (he has to

reach through the crib rails, reach up and around and spend quite a while

figuring out getting the zipper out of it's special pocket and then

trying backwards and upside down...after all the trouble of getting it

unzipped, he ends up falling asleep LOL =). So...my take on it, is even

when he starts climbing out eventually, for $60, I bought 1 more year of

nighttime peace!

I've never regretted buying a lock for Noah's door. We installed it backwards

so it uses a key on his side, and a

" thumb-turner " on the outside. I don't worry about getting out in a fire, since

he wouldn't know what to do in an

emergency anyway. I'm actually more assured that I know exactly where he'll be,

and I wont have to search all over the

house to find him. You can use your old baby monitor if you are worried about

not knowing when he wakes up, so you can

go unlock the door. But for my money, this has been the best solution. His bed

is on the floor, (not too far to fall)

and his room is as baby proof as it can be. I feel it's the only way to keep

him safe at night...and to give me a real

nights sleep!

Perfect timing for you write this letter. With 's new sibling

coming in less than a month. We are debating weither or not to get a bed for

kristen. Luckily she has not tried to climb out of the crib. She does climb

everthing else.

So please pass on all the response you get.

Thank you,

Maureen

Thanks for all the information on changing sleeping

arrangements. Luckily I have a friend who has offered

us the use of her baby bed which came from Luxembourg

with her a few years ago. It sits on the floor and

has much taller sides than our cribs and maybe larger

too - can't remember. Her baby boy, age 4, will be

leaving it very soon and she has offered it to me.
