Everything takes place online now, from employment seeking, to finding directions, to networking. People that don't have the Internet life skill are being left behind. With proper instruction in safe and productive Internet use, teens with disabilities learn to use on-line life skills to support the on-land life skills they are already working on. 2. Can't block them forever. It's inevitable that teens with disabilities will encounter the Internet whether you block it or not. Just think about how many iPads and iPod Touches are popping up in special education classrooms. Better to arm them with the right tools for that encounter with appropriate instruction on things like how to identify scams, what's illegal on the Internet, and dealing with cyberbullying. Equip for safety! 3. It's the law. Illinois State law requires annual Internet safety instruction in public schools. Students with disabilities are not excluded from this instruction, but they need specialized, supported instruction that meets their unique learning needs. Until now, no such instruction has been available. In direct response to teacher demands for tools to teach Internet safety and productivity to students with developmental and learning disabilities, we're so excited to present the Safe and Productive Internet Life & Literacy Skills (SPILLS) Curriculum. Twenty comprehensive lessons integrate right into the existing curriculum to help special education teachers build this important life skill with their students from middle school to high school to transition.
