Check out one of our latest blog postings, Offering Youth with

Disabilities a New Beginning to Transportation, posted August 29. Since

convening the Youth with Disabilities Roundtable in 2009, ESPA has developed a

new initiative called Enhancing Youth Mobility with the goal of improving access

to transportation for youth with disabilities, specifically youth in transition.

Guide to Sustainable Transportation Performance Measures

(*.PDF)

Transit agencies are increasingly measuring the ability of

their systems to help protect natural resources, improve public health,

strengthen energy security, expand the economy, and increase mobility for all.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a report that describes

opportunities to incorporate environmental, economic, and social sustainability

into transportation decision-making through the use of performance measures.

Among the many measures explored in the report, the first one, transit

accessibility, measures the ability of people to reach destinations using public

transportation.

Safe Routes to School Noteworthy Practices Guide (*.PDF)

Since 2005, when the U.S. Congress established the national

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, states and local communities have been

empowered to make walking and bicycling to school a safe and available mode

choice. This guide provides examples of noteworthy SRTS program practices and

management approaches, and it includes information on state programs that have

provided additional support for children with disabilities. The Michigan SRTS

program, for instance, awarded grants to three schools, one of which used the

funding to create a mock intersection to teach students with disabilities how to

safely cross intersections.
