Clarification- Walgreens Pharmacy

Hi Ellen,

I'd like to provide clarification specific to the responses that you shared with

me that have been raised by individuals on your listserv, which are in response

to the communication I sent out earlier this week regarding Walgreens

pharmacies. As I reviewed the comments it appears that there may be some

confusion as to which parties are involved in the contract negotiations; I hope

this e-mail helps to clarify.

This negotiation is specific to Walgreens and Express Scripts and impacts

Walgreens nationally. This disruption impacts a large number of people in the

Chicagoland area - not just our own Aetna Better Health members. We regret that

members need to locate a new pharmacy and we will do everything possible to

assist our Aetna Better Health members in this transition. We checked our

members' zip codes against other pharmacies in their areas and found that 77.9%

of our Aetna Better Health members (who all reside in the suburbs) live within a

mile of a non-Walgreens pharmacy in their network. When you make the circle

larger, 94% of our members live within two miles of such a pharmacy and 99.8%

live within three miles. It is impossible to speculate on the contract issues

between the two parties, however it is not uncommon for contract issues to be

settled in the 11th hour. Nonetheless, we must prepare for Walgreens no longer

being a network provider as of January 1, 2012.
