Guest guest
Hi Kath, I've always just used the email on the website: http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/index.html I saw your question on inositol and how long to try. When we tried it, I figured I'd give it a 12-week try. You've got the building up period, say 6 weeks, so that gives an additional 6 week at your target dosage/day. We actually were at around 13.5 grams/day for (tho he could take more when he asked for it). Our inositol was 845mg per 1/4 tsp so that was .845 x 4 = 3.38 grams per tsp x 4 tsp per day = 13.52. 's OCD had just begun that year and when we started inositol his OCD seemed it might be getting worse. So I didn't know if OCD was getting worse on its own or due to having several bad OCD days (and inositol doing nothing at all) or if inositol might be increasing it. But I recalled reading that sometimes symptoms get worse at first on prescribed medication and we hung in there and things seemed to ease up a tiny bit. And then the longer he was on it, the more improvement he had. That was WAY back right before he turned 12. He's 18 now and we tried inositol again this past spring but no help this time. Keep us updated on how things are going! > > Hi > > You mentioned that you emailed Dr. Penzel? Where did you find his email > address.....would you be willing to share it? Guest guest
Thanks and ! I emailed Dr. Penzel and much to my surprise he wrote back just 2 hours later! He also agreed that 1 tsp (500 mg) 3x a day would be the max dose for her age. And once we work up to that dose we should give it another 2-3 weeks. To tell you the truth, I don't think that we can wait that long. She is having a terrible time with anxiety and more OCD symptoms since being off the Prozac. I'm not sure what we will do. This is the worst its been since first being diagnosed 3 years ago. I'm so concerned and discouraged! I'm thinking about putting her back on a low dose of prozac just to take the edge off, then pray that I find someone who knows what they are doing. There are so many herbs and amino acids that look promising, but since prozac is still in her system, her psychiatrist is very leary of combining. He just has no experience with natural remedies and now he made me afraid to try any of them for at least a month (which is the 1/2 life of prozac). We don't have that kind of time.......Oh, I'm so discouraged. I wish I could take this away from her. As mothers, we can bandage a cut, wipe their tears, console when their friends hurt them......but this OCD monster is so terrible! Thanks for " listening " . This is the only place I can go where I know others are going through the same thing!! Kath ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Hi everyone and thank you for letting me participate for the next three days in conversation on what is new in career planning for individuals with social communication disorders. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Turning Pointe is very excited to partner with Walgreens and Office Max in new pre-training models to place candidates in career settings. Yes, Walgreens did pilot a program in Texas and they have learned a lot and are now ready to roll this out into a national model. Walgreens has teamed up with Turning Pointe to assist and develop the pre-training models. The first model will be here in Naperville with the goal being to roll it out in other cities and states. This is a long term plan and will take a period of time that has not yet been determined. Each pre-training environment is built and designed to place an individual in a specific position with that given company. Certain tasks can be generalized but we have designed the environments to instruct the tasks in a specific manner that will prepare the candidate to be qualified for the position. Each company has their own philosophy/concepts so turning Pointe adapts to the company’s procedures so we are able to ensure a successful transition from the pre-training environment to the work place. We initially looked into a generalized training but have realized that the candidates needed specialized/individualized training for each company. From a behavioral concept if we generalized all of the skills/tasks it would be difficult for the individual to receive a greater understanding of each task and the philosophy of the company. Office Max is very excited to join in from a retail and distribution component. They have been pushing hard to get this initiative moving towards a national model. I feel they will be a leader in the corporate world for reaching out to individuals with disabilities. Their team is in this for the best interest of the community and providing careers for people with disabilities. Most of us know about their Distribution Center model (Randy , , et al) and also we’d heard that they piloted a Retail Store disability employment model down in Texas with some of their stores, correct? So they are widening the scope of retail store employment now to include Naperville and where else? Did they learn lessons from that pilot about training for stores that has led to development of this curriculum/internship concept? In other words, is the curriculum infused with concepts/terminology/philosophy from these employers (is it Walgreens or Office Max specific training) or is it more general good workplace skills a person could take with them to any potential employer? Thanks.
Guest guest
Am forwarding on a question by another IPADD member. I'll be away from my computer tomorrow for most of the day, so if others have questions for or Turning Pointe, please be sure to post them tomorrow! thanks again for your thoughtful replies to our questions. One more day folks and then he's back to his day job. Here's the question: How does this model translate to supporting these young adults to anticipate and prepare for social interactions, work place changes, etc.. in the " real " workplace location? I was under the impression that simulating a work place setting does not promote the development of the skills necessary to manage in the actual workplace. This model seems to be focused on work tasks, which is good, but I thought most people with disabilities lose employment because of soft skill type issues. Isn't " place and train " in the integrated work environment the way to go? If not, why?
Guest guest
Candidates will have the opportunity to train in both environments. Our goal is not to have them just train in the Turning Pointe environment but to also train in the actual workplace. From a behavioral science point of view we have seen great success beginning in a controlled environment (teaching the tasks) and transitioning into the non controlled environment (the workplace). Social communication can and will be instructed in both environments.  Social communication is the reason that over 90% of people on the spectrum have lost their positions. This 90% is due to many factors. One component maybe the lack of customer service but yet we have seen many individuals lose their jobs because of the lack of understanding the daily communication that exists in the workplace. Temple talks about the informal rules in the workplace. The best people to teach the informal rules, direct lines of management and understanding daily communication will be the Walgreens and Office Max staff in a controlled environment. I feel we need to look at communication from many perspectives and this will be taught best in both environments. We have performed social analyses in all environments of the corporations to gain a greater understanding of each workplace. The analyses also help us understand how the skills can be taught in each environment. Guest guest
Thank you, Chris. I am happy to see that there will be cross training, both in a more structured environment and in the work place. We will look forward to seeing outcome data. Hopefully all of your participants will obtain competitive employment and be able to retain their jobs over a long period of time. I think we would all like to hear from you in a year, to see how things are working. Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@...
