Guest guest
My son turned 18 in March, gets the homebased waiver, and will be in school until 22. I'm getting conflicting answers from the agencies I work with but what I've read is that we don't have to do anything until he's turning 22. The waiver can just stay as is, correct? I tried calling the Department of Human Services in DuPage County last week and the phone just rang and rang when I selected talking to a person. May be they're getting a jump on the government shutting down? Thanks. ____________________________________________________________ 57 Year Old Mom Looks 27! Guest guest
I am not sure about the waiver, but in speaking with Springfield earlier this year, my understanding is the same as yours. If he is in school until 22, after he exits the school system is when the waiver is of help. Nothing to do until then.  Regarding the DHS ,I don't think it hasn't anything to do with pending gov't shutdown; I think, unfortunately, that this lack of service it typical.  My experience over many weeks of calling is that I had to show up one day (with lots of paperwork in hand) and wait to see a real person.  The situation there is dire, in my opinion.  Be ready to spend a good part of a morning or afternoon there, and be prepared with what you want to exit with.  Without pushing for what I believed to be true, I still don't think we would have gotten my son approved.  Even in working with a supervisor, they spoke in circles on what action needed to be taken.  Once the light bulb went on, we received approval within the week.  This is just my experience; but seeing what I did that day in the office, I don't think it's just me being critical.  Good Luck! Guest guest
It sounds like he is in the Children’s Home Based Services program. When a person turns 18 he is considered an adult and is eligible to apply for the Adult HBS, which is usually a formality. The programs are very similar but the adult program has more flexibility. And the DHS policy is that you are supposed to switch to the adult program, though that isn’t enforced very strictly. So I would definitely encourage you to apply. But don’t call the DuPage County DHS office; they don’t handle developmental disabilities. Call Pact Inc., which is the DHS Division of DD’s service coordination agency (PAS agency) for DuPage and they can guide you through doing this. You will get the same dollar amount of services in the adult program as long as your son is in school. When he exits school the dollar amount will go up by 50%. Ed McManus From: grzywa@... Guest guest
Thank you. I have a new coordinator and she was asking her boss for answers when I originally asked, so maybe she didn't get the question right. I will re ask again this week. Thanks again. Guest guest
When Angel turned 18, we didn't have to do anything about the Child's Home Based Waiver. When she turned 22, then it turned into the Adult waiver. As long as your son is still in school, you don't have to do anything. > > My son turned 18 in March, gets the homebased waiver, and will be in > school until 22.
