Finally, after years in hibernation, back by popular demand, The Connections

Center RDI Newsletter (see below)!

Feel free to subscribe yourself, for the most up-to-date distribution.

This issue is a wonderful collection of reflections from Dr. Sheely, a sample

journal from a Dad (so motivating!), and a simple reminder of the importance and

purposefulness of " the family walk. "

Enjoy,

" Make visible what, without you, might perhaps have never been seen. "

My vicinity affords many good walks; and though for so many years I have walked

almost every day, and sometimes for several days together, I have not yet

exhausted them.

-Henry Thoreau

This evening and every evening this week take a walk around your neighborhood.

Child or teenager beside you, clear your mind, slow your pace and appreciate the

rain or the sun or the changing of leaves. Last night I discovered a green

parrot at my neighbor's feeder. I wonder what you will see together.

Sink or Swim

By Dr. le Sheely

R.SheelyMy mother is 95 and the pithy sayings which were the grist of her

child-rearing skills, even though most annoying, remain firmly ensconced in my

brain. For example, getting ready for school with the fourth button missing from

a favorite sweater: " A stitch in time saves nine " Or, arguing politics over

dinner, " Man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still " . Each

sing-song saying meant as a quick solution to end an argument or circumvent a

mindful discussion. Having said that, there were other interactions that were

more drawn out, more structured-all designed to begin the growing-up process of

a five year old.

In spite of many time-saving conveniences, parents today often find themselves

on a fast-paced track during the time they spend with their children,

overlooking those rich, teachable moments that occur over and over again. And,

while a fast track is important for sprinting, it is counter-productive for

mindfully guiding the maturation process that turns little children into

intellectually savvy and healthy, strong adults with jobs and solid

relationships.

Journal Entry From an RDI Dad

RDI Consultant, Carol Subramani

The following journal entry was shared on our online community platform by RDI

Consultant, Carol Subramani who practices RDI in Mumbai, India.

My journey with RDI so far has been one filled with positives and I felt that I

must put them down so that it will always be a permanent reminder even when one

has hopefully moved on and become complacent as is the tendency when things are

going well.

We plunged into RDI with a little bit of skepticism but with a whole hearted

will to make our son's life better. As soon as we started, the first big myth

was busted when, we were politely told to shut up.
