During the next month, the Congressional Super Committee (Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction) will be working on a plan to achieve $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction above cuts already made. Cuts to important disability-related programs, like Medicaid, could be proposed by the Committee and enacted by Congress. This would severely harm people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in your state. Through The Arc’s “Don’t Cut Our Lifeline Campaign,†we must continue to fight to protect federal programs that are vital to our community! Your Senators and Representative can influence what is going on by working with their colleagues on the Super Committee. And all Members of Congress must ultimately vote on the Super Committee’s plan. Your Senators and Representatives are in DC to be your voice during these negotiations, and you have the right to be heard! Nowis the time to contact your Representative and Senators and let them know that Medicaid is an essential lifeline to you and your family. Urge them to contact their colleagues on the Super Committee and explain that Medicaid is vital to their constituents and that they will not support any proposal that cuts Medicaid. You can make a difference in Washington, DC by picking up the phone and explaining how Medicaid is your family’s lifeline. What should I say? a.. The budget cannot be balanced on the backs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Medicaid and other programs that serve the most vulnerable people must be exempt from deficit reduction plans. b.. Revenues must be a part of the solution. c.. Please convey these important messages to your colleagues who serve on the Super Committee, and let your colleagues know that you won’t support a plan that harms programs vital to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. d.. Don’t Cut Our Lifeline! Your voice matters, so make sure that you are heard loud and clear!
