Guest guest
Here are the answers to these questions: Illinois MENTOR could come into play if/when an individual is approved for CILA funding (or possibly thought they could privately pay for residential services out of pocket). The MENTOR or HOST HOME model could be an alternative to a traditional group home model, is that right, or do you have to get special approvals for it even after securing CILA funding? This is correct. Currently, all of our Host Homes are funded with CILA funding. The process is the same. Our process includes recruiting the Mentors, licensing their homes and then doing all the required training, screening, etc… that we do for the Mentor to be able to take someone into their home. We have a lot of new IPADD members with young adults approaching the end of public school transition services. We have varying degrees of understanding about the costs associated with residential placements, as well as about how difficult or easy it is to get publicly funded residential. Could you comment on either the costs associated with, say, a year of residential living/services and the number of ‘newly funded’ families you had the opportunity to work with last year? This is clearly the challenge we have as a state. In states where we’ve done this model for many years, the state works directly with us because they are aware that the services are highly individualized, family-oriented, more stable (among a few of the benefits) and cost effective. Our directors are trying to work with Illinois now and let them know that this option is a cost savings to group and institutional living because even though they fund this program, they really don’t seem to understand it and the true benefits. I think that the more families request this type of cost effective program for their adult children, the more they will look at it and be able to offer funding to more individuals because it’s cost effective for them. Thanks so much. This is such helpful information for us to have. L.
