The Arc of Illinois

The Arc of Illinois is a state chapter of The Arc

of the United States. The Arc of Illinois is committed to empowering persons

with disabilities to achieve full participation in community life through

informed choices.

Leaders in The Arc:

This is an important bill related to developmental

disabilities as well as autism and the LEND Program at the Institute for

Disability & Human Development at UIC! I was briefed on this bill at our

national convention last week.

We need Senator Kirk and Durbin to support this

bill. Please call or act now.

URGE SENATORS TO PASS THE COMBATING AUTISM

REAUTHORIZATION ACT

Take Action!

We're Almost There ....

Yesterday, the House of Representatives

overwhelmingly passed the bipartisan “Combating Autism Reauthorization Actâ€

(H.R. 2005) by voice vote. This is a major victory BUT we are not “out of the

woods†yet.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), the lead sponsor of

the Senate bill (S. 1094), then went to floor to ask his Senate colleagues to

unanimously agree to pass the bill. Unexpectedly, two Senators raised

objections to passing the bill under unanimous consent: Sens. Tom Coburn (R-OK)

and Jim DeMint (R-SC). Click here to watch the videos.

What Does the Combating Autism Act Do?

It provides funding to educate professionals

about proper screening, diagnosis, and intervention for children with autism

spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities. It also funds autism

research and surveillance. The Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and

Related Disabilities (LEND) program is just one of the things that the CAA

supports.. Click here to learn more.

Why is This Important Now?

The Combating Autism Act will expire on

September 30. If it is not reauthorized before then, people with all

developmental disabilities stand to lose appropriate diagnostic, early

intervention, and support services.

Take Action

Call your Senators’ offices TODAY. Click on

the " Take Action " link and enter your zip code to locate your Senator's phone

number.

What to Say:

" Please Vote for S. 1094, the reauthorization of

the Combating Autism Act, before the Senate recess.
