Guest guest
Generally one receives Medicare after receiving SSDI for a two year period. Many folks who are eligible for Medicare also are elgible for Medicaid which pays the Part B and Part D premiums plus most if not all copays on doctor's visits, prescriptions, etc. If the woman only has Medicare, she may want a private supplemental insurance. Often the combination of Medicaid and Medicare is all that a typical person needs and comprable to many private plans. You may want to talk with her employer to see what additional coverage she will be receiving if she enrolls in the private health insurance plan. The major advantage to having private coverage, is the ability to access a larger number of doctors. Some doctors will not accept Medicaid patients and some are now refusing Medicare patients due to reductions in fees set by the government so private insurance may be helpful. I'm afraid there is no one answer that fits all situations. You will need to investigate the additional coverage she is buying to determine if it is a good idea or not. Guest guest
thanks theresa. can she have medicare, medicaid and insurance via her employer? she rarely goes to the doctor, does not take prescriptions, i am more concerned about major medical. she is becoming eligible after being on ssdi for 2 years ... i just assumed she would be joining a medicare healthcare provider, such as humana, but wondered if she could still keep the coverage she is paying for via old country buffet...  although she is eligible for medicaid, she rarely goes to the doctor, and is on the " what you spend this month, you get next month.... "  am i making sense? as i said, i just assumed when her two years were up, she'd join humana, a plan both her parents are on...  thanks again... kristine  From: Theresa Varnet <tvarnet@...> > " IPADDUnite " <IPADDUnite > >Sent: Thursday, September 22, 2011 3:06 PM >Subject: Re: Question re: Medicare/Job Insurance Coverage > > >  > >Generally one receives Medicare after receiving SSDI for a two year period. You will need >to investigate the additional coverage she is buying to determine if it is a good idea or not. Guest guest
Hi e, I'm sorry I can't give you specific advice as all of these decisions vary depending on person's needs. If it were me in your position,  I'd first look into whether she is eligible for standard Medicaid or Health Care Benefits for Working Disabled which will save her the cost of the Part B and Part D premiums. I'd then look at her doctors and see if they all accept Medicare/Medicaid payments. I'd then look at managed care programs such as the Humana you mention to see if this would give her more medical care options than her Medicare/medicaid coverage will provide. I'd likely only opt for the payment of private health insurance at an additional fee  if it were going to give her an added benefit or access to higher quality medical care. Unless a company self insures, there is seldom a problem with having private insurance, Medicare and Medicaid. Usually (but not always), private insurance pays first, then Medicare and Medicaid is always the payer of last resort. If the health insurance is supplemental to Medicare, then Medicare pays first and private insurance 2nd. Hope this helps. You will need to do some homework before you make a decision on her behalf or with her and her family if they are available to assist you in making a decision. Terrie From: e Gabb <kristinegabb@...> " IPADDUnite " <IPADDUnite > Sent: Thursday, September 22, 2011 4:26 PM Subject: Re: Question re: Medicare/Job Insurance Coverage  thanks theresa. can she have medicare, medicaid and insurance via her employer? she rarely goes to the doctor, does not take prescriptions, i am more concerned about major medical. she is becoming eligible after being on ssdi for 2 years ... i just assumed she would be joining a medicare healthcare provider, such as humana, but wondered if she could still keep the coverage she is paying for via old country buffet...  although she is eligible for medicaid, she rarely goes to the doctor, and is on the " what you spend this month, you get next month....
