Guest guest
Colleen, what is good at? What was his favorite part about his Jewel job or other jobs he’s had? What immediately comes to mind are food pantries since you mentioned Jewel, but that would be a lot of unpacking, checking expiration dates, shelving/facing, etc. Not a ton of customer contact on a daily basis. Let us know more and maybe we can help think. Guest guest
His favorite part of the job was helping customers to their cars. He frequently won a award of $50.00 gift certificate for pointing out groceries under cart that had not been scanned or paid for. He is capable of unpacking, checking expiration dates. He loves to talk to people and be a helper. He is a Jaycee member as helps with Easter egg hunt, egg stuffing. Village picnic assist with Bingo selling, handing out cards to players. This year he helped making bird feeders with the children at Village Picnic. Guest guest
Colleen, Have you tried looking at the Bolingbrook Patch for volunteer contacts? Here in Naperville that’s what a lot of people use now. It’s an online news service, not in every town but there’s definitely one in yours – the link is www.bolingbrook.patch.com and if you click on the Volunteers tab at the top, then click on You Want to Volunteer, a listing of available organizations looking for volunteers will pop up for your area, with email/phone contacts etc. It’s a starting point. In addition to the other suggestions you’ve received about Resale shops, Humane societies, Food Pantries, etc – other places we’ve found include hospitals (including their gift shops), Meals on Wheels, local & state legislators (several have hired people on a part-time basis locally), libraries, and of course the many civic groups like you’d mentioned the Jaycees. Since is already a member there, you could also try building on his social capital with them, ask if there’s any regularly scheduled volunteer hours he could fill. And lastly, if you have the time, tell us why is choosing not to pursue additional paid work (or maybe he has/is but you didn’t mention it). It hurts us all to hear about someone losing a paid job over medication changes! We’d hope there could be other paid work opportunities in his future, too. We can all learn from others’ experiences, so if you’re comfortable sharing a bit more info with the group, I’m sure we’d learn a lot from ’s story. Thanks for writing, and keep us posted on his progress. Good luck, ! Laurie From: Colleen Caputo Sent: Friday, July 22, 2011 7:43 PM IPADDUnite Subject: Re: Volunteer job for I think that might work. Guest guest
Colleen I think it is important to match volunteer opportunities with what the person likes to do Does he like to read simple first grade books, if so would he like to be a reader at a pre school? Does he like to be outside and work, could he cut lawn for an elderly neighbor or help with the local garden club? Does he like to run or walk, is there a young child with a disability who would like s companion for a walk or run? Does he likes sports? Could he volunteer with a YMCA program with children or the elderly? Do you have a local gym that sends their towels out? Maybe they could hire him to wash the towels in house. Does he like animals? Could he volunteer at the pet shelter? Hoe about a local church? Could he open the collection envelopes Monday morning and sort cash from checks? Is there a local food pantry? They are always looking for volunteers. Oh well, just some ideas to help you get started. Guest guest
You've heard a lot of good suggestions. If he's been helpful in getting groceries into cars while doing pleasant chat, I'd look into local food pantries. If he's in the Jaycees, why not ask around the membership if anyone has a volunteer or part-time opportunity? Some of those members already know him. As summer ends, it may become easier to find volunteer opportunities. The high school kids are having a harder time getting summer jobs, and so are volunteering to get work experience and references. -Gail From: Colleen Caputo <jc1voyager@...> Subject: Re: Volunteer job for IPADDUnite Date: Friday, July 22, 2011, 11:00 AM  His favorite part of the job was helping customers to their cars.
