Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that the topic at our TACA meeting this Saturday is Nutrition's

Impact on Sensory Processing, and our speaker is Kathleen M. Lord, MS, Holistic

Nutrition, OTR/L.

Saturday, August 20, 2011 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Home State Bank

Community Meeting Room on basement level

611 S. Main Street

Crystal Lake, IL 60014

Sorry, child care is not available.

Sensory processing disorder (SPD) has been undergoing extensive research to

determine its origin, but many families want immediate answers. Let's first

consider that SPD, and the earlier term, sensory integration dysfunction, were

not accepted terms, not even common knowledge, 50, 20, even 10 years ago. Now

consider that the quality of our food supply has drastically changed over that

same time period. Is there a connection to our children's behavior and

development? Are nutritional deficiencies in children contributing to behavioral

problems and SPD? This presentation will explain and compare the similarities

between sensory processing disorder (SPD) and its associated behaviors with

symptoms of poor nutritional intake. You will learn the connection between brain

function, sensory processing and nutrition. You will learn what nutrients may be

deficient or missing in your child's diet and how to correct any imbalances.

Strategies for getting our " picky eaters " to eat a wider variety of healthy,

nutrient-dense foods will also be discussed.

Kathleen Lord is an occupational therapist with twenty-five years of clinical

experience and a holistic nutritionist, blending the two specialty fields in the

treatment of children with special needs. A senior therapist at Beth Osten &

Associates in Skokie, IL for the last seven years, she is a California native

and has previously worked in rehabilitation settings, state and county programs,

NICU, school-based settings and private home-based work throughout her career.

Kathy's clinical specialties include sensory processing, vision processing and

therapy, D.I.R./Floortime, Infant Massage, Therapeutic Listening/Integrated

Listening Systems (iLs), Interactive Metronome, Yoga for kids, Kinesio-taping,

Brain Gym, oral-motor-feeding, pediatric weight loss and nutritional

consultations.
