Guest guest
Do you know what your local unit of government has prepared in the event of a natural disaster, weather incident, or other emergency evacuation situations? All municipalities should have some kind of plan in place; if you're interested in making sure that people with disabilities are represented in the plans, take a peek at yours and then consider sharing some of the information in this state of Texas free resource guide. Love the visuals! Worth sharing with your local elected officials. Here's the link: https://www.preparingtexas.org/preparedness.aspx?page=32137bc8-eed7-42bb-ad7e-27\ 65fd8abdb9 Here's a description: The Functional Needs Support Services (FNSS) Tool Kit is a set of resources for communities/local government entities to use as they make plans for responding to disasters or catastrophic emergencies. It was prepared in response to the legal requirements in the Americans with Disabilities Act, and their impact on things like planning for, and providing emergency shelters that are accessible to everyone. Most of the guide is made up of forms and checklists that bring together legal requirements and the actual needs of people with varying disabilities. The guide is broken up into the following three parts: Part I: Planning Tools (These forms and checklists provide communities with ideas to consider when making a community plan in case of a catastrophic emergency or disaster) Part II: Operational Tools (These forms and checklists provide communities with ideas about how to accommodate the needs of people with disabilities during the disaster or emergency) Part III- Recovery (These forms and checklists provide communities with ideas about how to help people after the emergency or disaster) Part IV Additional Resources The entire 102-page book can be downloaded for free as either a MS Word document or a PDF file.
