Guest guest
Hi. My daughter is 18 and severely affected. I do know many other children and families from all around the USA who have had success doing biomedical treatments. I use them as well for my daughter because we will never give up on helping her feel better physically and function better. She has autoimmune issues, medically related to her immune system not working properly so she is on a special diet and supplements/medicines - like many children who have an autism diagnosis. Not talking is a part of autism but there are reasons for the language issues, repetitive behaviors, aggression and poor social skills. Some things to consider: -He may need a device that helps him communicate. Talk to your school district about an evaluation for a device like a Dynovox or an IPAD. -Check out Generation Rescue as they have parents who will help you figure out what may help your child based on their success with their child. http://www.generationrescue.org/resources/find-a-rescue-angel-3/ -keep a daily diary of his food and behaviors. Many children with an autism diagnosis can't tolerate gluten, casein and soy. It can cause bloating, constipation and then- aggression, irritability. Never give up and one can still be successful, even without being able to talk...communication is the key. http://www.ageofautism.com/2010/06/young-man-with-autism-uses-assistive-technolo\ gy-to-give-commencement-speech.html?cid=6a00d8357f3f2969e20133f0ef1557970b http://www.ageofautism.com/2010/06/watch-jeremy-sicilekiras-commencement-speech.\ html On Sun, Aug 7, 2011 at 10:26 AM, gzlaaa2011 <gzlaaa2011@...> wrote: > ** > > > My son has autism. Guest guest
Hello, As Richelle said autism is such a roller coaster and there have been so many times I wanted to get off, and I wonder about my daughter, does she ever want to get off the ride? Is it as tough for her, maybe tougher? It's so hard to know when they can't tell you, and then I wonder if the behaviors are just their way of saying that something is very tough for them. It makes me feel like I have to be a very inadequate mind reader. Some good advice I was given was to look at my daughter in 6 month increments instead of day to day.....it's very hard and I'm working on it, but I think would help me to function better if I could do it. I would also like to add that my daughter benefited from a diet free of all kinds of additives, chemicals, artificial anything, which includes food dyes, especially red 40. Lots of protein and maybe adding magnesium, fish oil and B6 seemed to help with her behavior. She also benefited from physical play to help her get worn out/calmed down. As she got older she also seemed to respond to having gluten and casein out of her diet. Listening to stories on tape was something she liked too. Just to mention some things that helped my daughter, everyone is different though. Anyway, there will always be some good days ahead. Guest guest
My son is 19 and has autism. He did not really speak until he was 6-7. Those were the years before PECS or much assistive technology. We used traditional school/private Speech/Occupational?Physical therapy for him, as well as sign language and a homemade Polaroid photo communication system (similar to PECS). He was in county special education communication classes from the age of 3, as our local schools did not have anyone who could communicate with him. Although he does have significant dietary issues, removing gluten/casein did not help and actually landed him in the hospital twice. My son was also very frustrated by the communication barrier. I wore long sleeves year round, even in the summer, to hide the bruises and bite marks. We were told by a pediatric neurologist that he would probably never speak, and would need to be institutionalized due to his behaviors. He had and still has significant sensory issues. You could also look into Sensory Integration Disorders and an OT that specializes in this field. This helped our son very much. My son also has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and is on Prozac. I know many feel this is drastic, but he has been on it for 14 years, and only continues to do well. My best advice - NEVER GIVE UP! My son has no speech challenges today, completed high school last year in the top 10% of his class academically in regular education classes, and is an Illinois State Scholar, as well as the recipient of many other awards. He will start his sophomore year as an honors student in our local junior college this fall. No one else is going to be a better advocate for your son than you! Email me privately if I can be of help, Autism- Talking My son has autism. He is 7 years old, and he is not verbal yet. We are trying everything so he can talk.I know alot of you have older childen. When they start talking? I did no give up yet. However, It became harder and harder specially now, he start to hit, bite, scream, and pull my hair and his siblings. He is trying to communiate in different way. We are using PEC but he still doing these behaviours. I need your help. When he is going to talk? he makes alot of sounds but not words.
