Hi.

My daughter has attended since the early days of GSI. She s now 18 and I

have only wonderful things to say about the staff and their care.

Unfortunately, due to my daughter's many health issues and recent years of

my divorce, I don't get to participate in many of their activities -

fundraising, community, support - so I do feel a bit out of the loop but

some friends have recently had their son start at GSI and they are very

happy as well.

Best of luck

Giant Steps was an excellent support for our autistic (non-verbal) child, as

well as for our family. Not only was the staff able to deal with my son's

autistic eccentricities during his childhood years, but Giant Steps provided

excellent inclusion support and services to the local school district during

his elementary, middle and high school inclusion journey. is now 18

and a senior in high school. It took work but we are accepted by the school,

teachers, kids and community and I believe we have paved the way for other

families with developmental disabilities. He is gracefully navigating the

transition program, has terrific life skills and will complete college to

live a fully independent, verbal and rewarding adult life. I contribute much

of our success to early intervention and Giant Steps.

In addition: is taking Namenda and we have seen significant

improvement in is communication and social skills. In our case, after all

the hard work, I am a believer that autism is reversible, with knowledge,

individualized support, science (and God's grace).

I am a huge proponent of the Least Restrictive Environment and advocated hard to

keep my child in our community with typically developing peers. However, a child

affected by autism can only realize the full benefits of their educational

program if the Local Education Agency Representative is well informed about

autism specific best practices and willing to lead their team(s)toward achieving

educational excellence.

We were relieved there was a placement available at Giant Steps. My child just

completed a full school year there and our family is very pleased. Giant Steps

works hard to achieve excellence. They understand autism, respect individual

needs and provide supports that are empowering so learning can take place.

Sounds like many are happy with Giant Steps, which is good to hear. Glad they

are getting it right!

As for autism being curable...I think that is a pretty broad statement since the

spectrum is so wide and varied. So happy for you and your son, .
