Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for sharing your story. Isn't a huge shame what we have to go through?? My Mom was asking me today why this always happens to our family.........I tried to explain to her that I didn't think our family was the only one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If she ONLY KNEW!!! It is hard and it is very exhausting. They just don't know what all we go through. I am VERY sure she didn't know that the same girl I am trying to get to a social program underwent her 10th surgery yesterday and had a partial lung collapse!! Sad that they have lost or worse yet never had compassion for the very kids they work for! Boy, we could spend a weekend together sharing stories! Guest guest
What state are you in? Here in NY the children do not have to be taken to the same place everyday of the week. I would google your state's education department and through that find transportation guidelines. Here is the link to NY's _http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/schoolbus/_ (http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/schoolbus/) Dawn ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Guest guest
Hi Laurie, I hear your scream all the way here :-) Thankfully, we are done with dealing with transportation (we walk to our home school now, and my biggest frustrations are idiots in the parking lot on days we drive, but it's still better than transportation, LOL). Many of our district, transportation administrators are arrogant, pig-headed, and completely sel-rightous about their " rules " , which are based on who knows what, but never on fact or law. We had issues in preschool almost daily.... some drivers would come to our house (as per IEP), others refused because they had to use our asphault drive to turn around (we are at the end of a lane that dead-ends) and we might sue them for damaging our driveway (I offered to submit a notarized affidavit saying please turn in our driveway, we will not sue you, but that wasn't good enough), some drivers would not even find us, some drivers would make sure an aide met at school, others would just drop her off and then leave.... every week it was something else, and they could always make up a " rule " that made them right. Before they had the appropriate harnass/seatbelts on the special ed busses, I send with her car seat (she was 3). Some drivers refused to let me use a private car seat, some were fine, but then the afternoon driver wouldn't let her use it on the way home..... it's almost hillarious now, but I spent a lot of time screaming at transportation. Although you are completely right, and transportation should deal with 2 different drop off locations, it's probably easier to call and IEP meeting, write a social goal that will be met, at least in part, by going to the after school program for socialization skills, and then tell transportation that it's in her IEP, and they'd better make it work. Good luck! , mom to (11), (9 DS), and Sammy (8) trier9@... wrote: > PLEASE would someone tell me that I am RIGHT this time?? Guest guest
Is the afterschool program affiliated with or provided by the school? Is the bus that is transporting a school district bus or private? Do the other young ladies ride to the afterschool every day or just those three? As a last resort, If the IEP says they provide transportation to a different drop off point, then they do. ; ) Judi _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of trier9@... Guest guest
They don't have a choice! " Sec. 602(26)(A) In general.--The term `related services' means transportation, and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services....... " copy and pasted from: http://idea.ed.gov/explore/search My interpretation is they have to do it! The " related services " of the IEP clearly includes transportation. They must include related services in the IEP because it is a part of the IEP and related services clearly includes transportation!! Guest guest
OK, now I am screaming for you :-) Actually, maybe screaming is a good idea now, or crying or making so other sad, pathetic scene that you make everyone so uncomfortable that it's just easier to fix this little issue than have you sobbing all over their desk? The IEP team's " We just don't do that " would be my starter now, just because I would want them to know that it's not an acceptable answer. Who knows what else they " just won't do " I wish I could think of something better :-) , mom to (11), (9 DS), and Sammy (8) > As a last resort, If the IEP says they provide transportation to a > different > drop off point, then they do. ; ) > > They won't put it into her IEP because .................drum > roll..............here is their educated > answer..........................................................................\ ................................................... > ....................... > ..............WE JUST DON'T DO THAT. > > > > >

Guest guest
Your school system needs to get the flexibility needed to deal with special needs and programs which aren't all at the home school! Jan got transportation to her after school job and for a while they also brought her home after the job. She was working as a volunteer in day care. Jan got transportation to another girl's home one day a week when she went to with that cwds to horseback riding lessons. The girl she went riding with wasn't at her school. Jan got summer transportation to and from a job working in childcare at one of the school sites. She had that for two summers. When she worked for Mcs (as a follow-up to a cooking class she took), she had transportation to the job and then to home. OK, when she stayed long after school to take part in the school musical (two different years), I had to pick her up and bring her home. None of this was trivial. Jan never went to school in district, but the district did what was needed to for her development. The idea that transportation for special needs can't happen is like saying that the football team has to be picked up by parents after practice. Yes, I worked and so did Jan's Mom. We worked hard to have the flexibility to meet the needs Jan had, but we needed the help. end of rant ... Rick ... dad to Jan 34 years old ... whose transportation is the same one used by senior citizens locally $3 a ride to anywhere

Wow RIck! And then to home? That is one thing I am not even going to try for. Just get my girl to the after school program. I'm encouraged to hear it being able to 'work' for Jan. That is really all I need. Just to get information that it can be done and I am not asking for a miracle here! Thanks a million! I'm not done yet..........=) Laurie ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Guest guest
I was told by another parent that PSW's travel free on public transportation when they accompy a person with disabilities. I've searched the ADA website and found nothing about it. Does anyone know if there's any truth to this? If so, can you send me the details? Thanks, Jama
