Guest guest
, We live in the district 99, but my daughter went to Westmont HS. There was a major confusion on where she would graduate from. After much complaining on my part, she graduated from Westmont with her fellow student. It was a major PITA because Westmont NEVER sent Angel anything, only 99. You should call the outside school to see if your son can attend that ceremony. > > My son is almost 18 and attending school outside of our home district. Guest guest
When my son was 18 he walked in the graduation ceremony and his name was listed with all his classmates. He is now 21. He will not receive his diploma until Dec. 31, 2011. That is the day before his 22nd birthday. Just make sure that the school does not have her down as a graduate. Guest guest
Yes! Complain so these turkeys don't ever do this to anyone again! Whatever graduation policy your district has, they should have made very clear to you and your son long before June. It's harder to do if your son attends an out-of-district school, but I'm sure the district has a list of those few folks, and is capable of communicating with them. If someone is listed on a graduation program, doesn't he have the right to know and to be present? Although your son may not have known many of the classmates, the district should have let him decide if he'd like to participate. If the dist was weird and thought that out-of-dist spec ed students were too challenging to include in graduation ceremonies, then they should have said so ahead of time. If the dist had a policy of sending students to graduation ceremonies after finishing transition (in which case I don't know why they would put names in the program at 18), they should have let your son know. Don't call the folks below; they'll have a chance to diminish your irritation. Send something written, so everyone will receive the full force of your wrath and will keep the paperwork to protect themselves. Write a nice hot scathing letter. Send it to: * the head of the high school spec ed dept * the admin for spec ed at the high school level in the district (if your dist has more than one high school, then this position may exist) * the high school principal * the dist superintendent * every member of the school boardAs a former free-lance reporter, I can tell you that your story is newsworthy to small local papers. If you are in the W, N, or NW Chgo suburbs, the Daily Herald is very sympathetic to DD stories, especially columnist Burt Constable. -Gail ________________________________ From: hoydac <CDMJH@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Mon, June 6, 2011 7:35:42 AM Subject: name in graduation program My son is almost 18 and attending school outside of our home district. Guest guest
I'm with Gail 100%. During our IEP, when I had noticed that I had never received anything (no graduation or senior pictures, no info on graduation, etc), I mentioned it to the team. The teacher (who was a long term sub) started making inquiries. She gave me the application to order the gown, cap, etc. The deadline had long past. Angel was to graduate the day after Memorial Day. The Friday before, two gowns, BOTH THE SAME DAMN SIZE, were sent. They were for someone 5'6 to 5'9. ANGEL IS 5'2 " . I was furious. I called, and of course with it being a Friday before a three day weekend, everyone was gone already. I did speak to someone who suggested I call Holson. They gave me the name of their Westmont contact. Of course, I get voice mail, so I sent a very scathing email to the principal. He was still there and so was the contact. She dropped off two smaller gowns (still too long, but at least Angel didn't look like a clown in them). We did her graduation pictures that weekend. It's a good thing that I am an amateur photographer and I do all her portraits (she won't sit for anyone else but me). On the day of graduation, her teacher sent home a gown that was her size (of course it was wrinkled). The cap was too small (why do they bother asking the size, another special needs graduate's hat was way too small and she's a little gal), but since Angel doesn't like caps anyway, I wouldn't make her wear it. Oh, and every year while Angel was in transition after high school, she still received graduation info from our home district (and phone calls from the suppliers wanted to sell Angel the class ring). It' ridiculous that we have to fight for stuff like this, it's bad enough that we have to fight to get our children an appropriate education. > > Yes!
