Alliance for Full Participation update: Illinois has a new state team!

Organized by Kim Zoeller, CEO/President of the Ray Graham Association, and with

at least two family participants from IPADD that I know of (me and

Partridge).

Committed to increasing the employment rates of people with developmental

disabilities in Illinois.

The Alliance for Full Participation's November 17-19, 2011 Summit: Real

Jobs--It's Everyone's Business, will be an historic convening of the leadership

of the intellectual and developmental disability community.

The Alliance Summit will bring together proactive leaders from around the

country, who will gather to share ideas, generate action plans and collectively

commit to making the goal of doubling integrated employment for people with IDD

a by the year 2015. Here's who is taking part:

c.. Self advocates from around the country.

d.. Over 130 expert speakers.

e.. Employment leaders from Bank of America, Lowes, Walgreens, Home Depot, JW

Winco, Acadia Windows and Doors, and Country Inn, St. s.

f.. CNN Special Correspondent Sesno, who will lead a high energy, highly

engaging Town Hall on the issues and stumbling blocks that keep us from our

goal.

g.. State and federal policy leaders including Senator Tom Harkin (invited),

Utah State Senator Menlove, representatives from the Department of Labor, ODEP,

HHS, and the Administration on Developmental Disabilities.

h.. Family members, providers, researchers, direct support professionals,

employers, policy makers, and program leaders. In short, everyone who shares a

commitment and a passion for making the Alliance's vision of full integration

for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities a reality.

In these economic times, employment matters more than ever. The Alliance Summit

is about action. How will we, as a community, come together to ensure that

integrated employment is a reality for all people with disabilities? Idea

sharing, networking opportunities and a closing session that will result in

actionable plans on a national, state and individual level all ensure that this

meeting will have lasting impact.

Look Who's Talking

The Alliance's roster of speakers is a Who's Who of all those committed to full

participation.

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) is best known for his signature legislative

achievement-The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA has broken down

barriers, created

opportunities and transformed lives, providing opportunity and access for more

than 50 million Americans with disabilities. Senator Harkin is chairman of the

Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, working to

guarantee that our economy works for all Americans. Senator Harkin has been

invited to present at AFP's opening plenary session.

E. Kiernan is the Director of the Institute for Community Inclusion

(UniversityCenter on Excellence in Developmental Disabilities) and Research

Professor in the Graduate College of Education and the McCormack School of

Policy Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. The author of more

than 125 articles and reports in the field of disabilities with a specific

emphasis on transition, employment, public policy development, workforce

development and systemic change, and the member of several national boards, Bill

will provide an overview of the current state of employment and the challenges

that keep AFP from its goal.

Sharon is Commissioner of the Administration on Developmental

Disabilities. The recipient of numerous awards, Sharon has also worked

extensively on the state level, working on public policy for the Oregon

Developmental Disabilities Coalition and for the Arc. She served as the co-chair

of the Oregon Family Action Coalition Team, founded DisabilityCompass.org and

managed the Oregon Partners in Policymaking Program.

M. Mank is the Director of the Indiana Institute on Disability and

Community at Indiana University. In addition, he is a Professor in the School of

Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction. As a writer and researcher,

has a long background in the education and employment for persons with

disabilities, authoring or coauthoring more than one hundred articles or book

chapters. His interests have long included quality improvement, organizational

change and transition of persons with disabilities from school to work and adult

life. will close the Summit by leading a call to commitment.

Petty has played a leading role in building the self-advocacy movement in

Arkansas and across the country. She was state coordinator of People First of

Arkansas from 1998 to 2007, and served as chair of Self Advocates Becoming

Empowered (SABE) from 2006 to 2008. She is a graduate of the University of

Arkansas and holds a degree in journalism. She is a consultant with Human

Service Research Institute (HSRI), and has led projects on self-advocacy and

youth leadership. currently works for the Arkansas UCEDD, Partners for

Inclusive Communities as a project trainer. will open the AFP Summit with

a call to action on " Why Employment Matters " .

Sesno is Director of the School of Media and Public Affairs at The

Washington University, former CNN Senior Vice President and Washington bureau

chief, and host and creator of a user-driven web site and PBS program addressing

energy and global environmental issues. A former anchor, White House

correspondent and interview host with CNN, Sesno is also a nationally-renowned

moderator, engaging some of the world's leading personalities. From five

American presidents, to Yasser Arafat, Margret Thatcher and Walter Cronkite,

Sesno has spoken with some of the most influential people of our time. Sesno

will once again serve as the moderator for AFP's Town Hall.

Mike Shriver is Business Support Executive for Bank of America's Global

Corporate Social Responsibility Team, responsible for managing key operational,

business, support and strategic issues including support. He is responsible for

managing the Support Services business operation for the bank, which provides in

sourcing products and services to the company, while employing nearly 300

individuals with intellectual disabilities. Shriver began his career working

with individuals with intellectual disabilities in 1977 and served as Chief

Executive Officer of Penn-Mar Organization. Shriver will present the employer's

perspective at the Town Hall.

Tim Shriver is the Chairman, Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer of

Special Olympics, serving 3.1 million Special Olympics athletes and their

families in 175 countries. Shriver has helped transform Special Olympics into a

movement that focuses on respect, acceptance and inclusion for individuals with

intellectual disabilities, by creating exciting new initiatives in athlete

leadership, cross-cultural research, health, education and family support.

Shriver is a powerful and vocal advocate for the IDD community, frequently

testifying before Congress and appearing on " The Today Show " , CNN, MTV and " A

World of Difference " , and producing or co-producing films including " The

Ringer " , " Amistad " , " The Loretta Claiborne Story " . Shriver will speak about the

power of vision and purpose at our plenary session.

Wehman is a Professor of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, Chairman of

Rehabilitation Research and Director of the Rehabilitation Research and Training

Center with a joint appointment in the Departments of Special Education and

Disability Policy and Rehabilitation Counseling. He pioneered the development of

supported employment at VCU in the early 1980s and has been heavily involved in

the use of supported employment with people who have severe disabilities, such

as those with severe mental retardation, brain injury, spinal cord injury or

autism.

Don’t congratulate me, for heaven’s sakes! I’m just a member of a rather

large team of people from around the state. So far it’s involved several

conference calls, a little Survey Gizmo and internet review. You know, my usual

stuff, sitting in front of my computer all day!
