The Arc of Illinois is committed to empowering persons with disabilities to achieve full participation in community life through informed choices. Leaders in The Arc: The Arc of the United State is kicking off a Medicaid protection campaign with the slogan, “Don’t Cut Our Lifeline!†Medicaid is the major funding source of all community supports/services in Illinois and it is on the chopping block in Washington D.C. Those services include home-based services, CILA, supported employment, day training, children’s services, ICFDD’s, and much more. The Arc has created a toolkit to help you and other advocates to act fast to convince the U.S. Congress to keep Medicaid intact, for Chapters of The Arc, go to this link (you must be logged in): https://www.thearc.org/page.aspx?pid=3233 If you are not a member of a Chapter of The Arc, please feel free to click here to download the PDF version. Please feel free to share with other advocates. We MUST act quickly. This week our U.S. Representatives are in their home districts until July 5th. U.S. Senators will be in their district offices from July 2nd to July 9th. We are asking that you contact your U.S. Representatives and two U.S. Senators in a variety of ways during these breaks, including calling their offices, setting up in person meetings, attending town hall meetings and writing letters to the editor. This toolkit developed by The Arc of the United States can guide your advocacy activities in the next few weeks. Don't Cut Our Lifeline Medicaid Toolkit Protect the Services You or a Loved One Rely On to Survive! Take Action Now! Right now, Congress is developing strategies to cut spending and bring down the federal deficit. As advocates for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who may bear the brunt of many of the proposed funding cuts and policy changes, our voices must be heard in these debates. Each of these legislative actions can dramatically harm the Medicaid program and the people it serves. We have compiled this toolkit to help you educate your constituents and allies about the threats we are facing, and to guide your advocacy activities in the next few weeks. The House of Representatives is on recess from June 25-July 5, and the Senate is on recess from July 2-10. This means that without votes keeping them in Washington, most Member of Congress will be back in their home states. We need you to contact your elected officials during these recesses and tell them, “Don’t Cut Our Lifeline!†Participate in their town hall meetings and 4th of July celebrations; visit their local offices; and invite them to meet families or to see your programs. Get everyone involved – this is critical! Please use the following materials to facilitate your advocacy efforts: a.. Questions & Answers on Potential Medicaid Cuts b..
