Guest guest
One of my all time favorite books is " Changed by a Child; Companion Notes for Parents of a Child with a Disability " . It was written by Barbara Gill, the mom of a young man with Down syndrome and a Partners in Policymaking graduate from Minnesota. Each page is complete within itself. So you don't have to start at the beginning and work to the end. Here's the link on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Changed-Child-Barbara-Gill/dp/0385482434/ref=sr_1_1?s= books <http://www.amazon.com/Changed-Child-Barbara-Gill/dp/0385482434/ref=sr_1_1?s =books & ie=UTF8 & qid=1310564590 & sr=1-1> & ie=UTF8 & qid=1310564590 & sr=1-1. And on an off-topic happy note, the skunk that was stinking up our whole house last night seems to have decided not to live under our back deck and has moved on. Any thoughts??? Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@... <mailto:egskb%40sbcglobal.net>
Guest guest
+1 Changed by a Child " From the Heart " edited by D.B. Marsh--anthology of mother stories " Uncommon Fathers " edited by J. Meyer--anthology of father stories, and there's not a lot of this out in the literature " You Will Dream New Dreams " edited by Stanley D Klein and Kim Schive, yet more parent stories, and a favorite of mine A book that is very autism-specific, and too detailed for the board member is " The World of the Autistic Child " by Bryna Siegel. For the board member, I'd suggest borrowing a copy and reading the chapter on family issues. On sibling issues: " What About Me? " by Bryna Siegel and Stuart Silverstein " The Ride Together " by and Judy Karasik " Riding on the Bus with My Sister " by Simon--I'm not wild about the book, but the quick references she makes to not knowing who all these professionals are and what they do, to learning to work with them, those parts are useful Ellen, I'd also suggest asking over at SibParent. -Gail From: Charlotte Cronin <fsn@...> Subject: RE: good books on disabilities IPADDUnite Date: Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 8:46 AM  One of my all time favorite books is " Changed by a Child; Companion Notes for Parents of a Child with a Disability " .
