One of the books I really liked when I first was looking for something on

behavior was Dave Hingsburger's book " Behaviour Self! " He is from Canada,

the reason for the u in the spelling of behavior. He spoke at an ARC

conference some years back. From the publishers website

http://www.diverse-city.com/display.htm it says:

Dave writes about the importance of understanding behaviour messages from

people with developmental disabilities in a straight forward yet humorous

fashion. This book gives insight to parents and staff with new ways on how

to get the message right! Never has behaviour programming been this much

fun!

Dave's books are small i.e. 36 pgs to 136 pgs, with a wealth of information.

NADD an association for persons with developmental disabilities and mental

health needs http://www.thenadd.org/pages/products/books.shtml has a number

of books.

The book by sister's Barbara Doyle and Doyle Iland

The next two books are by Chicoine MD and Dennis McGuire PhD.

I am on a Board and one of the Board members asked if there are any good

books that she and others could read that would give them greater insight

into raising, living with and supporting a person with an intellectual or

developmental disability.

Any thoughts???

You're welcome and I'm having just half a thought which is that I think it

is the Illinois Council on Developmental Disabilities that funds a lending

library. I know it used to be housed in Springfield and has the word

" Clearing House " in it. Anybody else remember more details?

Yeah, but someone else got the grant. I can’t quite remember who. I just

checked ICDD website and didn’t see it. So I’m not sure if it’s still in

existence. Charlotte

Hi,

A belated reply with the contact info for the Clearinghouse.  It used to be

located in Springfield in the same building as the IL Council on DD, but is now

in Champaign.  The librarian was very helpful to me in locating materials.

Thanks, Bonnie. As I recall, they used to have some materials which also

applied to older students as well as the ‘wee’ ones. We used to get quite a

few good autism-related books and materials from there, that could be helpful

with a variety of ages or to acquaint a new teacher/staff with the particular

disability. Appreciate you posting this.
