Guest guest
Lori, I has been charged for rent by my mother and have food stamp while earning Social Security. You might want to re-check the food stamp application and put down that you don't pay for foods.
Guest guest
Lori, I can't answer your entire question, but I will say if you stop charging her rent, SSI will reduce her check by one third. You may want to increase her rent by the $300 so you can pay for her special food. > > Wondering if anyone can answer my question. > > We have been collecting $250 for rent for my 22 year old daughter for the past 3 years. My daughter had her Redetermination For SSI recently. After reviewing the paperwork I noticed that it states that she does NOT buy food separately from other household members. This is not true. She has paid (debit card) for her own food separately for the past three years. Her food costs average $300 (she is on a medical diet for seizure control) so, it eats up a huge portion of her check. > > My question is ... would she be able to receive payment to be used for buying food as opposed to paying us rent? I'd really like to not have to charge her rent much longer. I am aware of the SNAP program, but because we charge her rent it is my understanding that she does not qualify for the Link card. > > Any help would be most appreciated ~ > Lori >
Guest guest
It was my understanding that SSI recipients DO qualify for food stamps thru the link card because of their income. Thanks, have a great day mwwhiskeymike@... Guest guest
I'm not so sure about this given the fact that my daughter pays for 100% of her food from her SSI I do understand that once we stop charging her rent that her SSI will be reduced by one-third I'd really like to stop charging her rent and figure out another way to increase her incoming funds. Also, once a disabled adult ages over 22 THEN they qualify for the Link card based off of their income and not their parents On Mar 30, 2011, at 9:57 AM, mary wisniewski wrote: > It was my understanding that SSI recipients DO qualify for food stamps thru the link card because of their income. > > Thanks, > > have a great day > > mwwhiskeymike@... > > > > From: cmfinato <cmfinato@...> > Subject: Re: Question: SSI/ Food > IPADDUnite > Date: Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 9:49 AM > > > > Lori, I can't answer your entire question, but I will say if you stop charging her rent, SSI will reduce her check by one third. > > You may want to increase her rent by the $300 so you can pay for her special food. > > > > > > > > > > Wondering if anyone can answer my question. > > > > > > We have been collecting $250 for rent for my 22 year old daughter for the past 3 years. Guest guest
I'm not an expert on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) but it is my understanding that eligibility is based on household income. So unless the adult SSI recipient claims to be a household of one and claims that no one else 'eats or cooks food with the applicant " , then the income of the parents and/or others living in the home is deemed. As for the 1/3rd reduction rule, that simply means if anyone is subsidizing a SSI recipient's food or shelter costs, then it is determined that the SSI recipient is receiving " in kind support " . If one is receiving " in kind support " one loses 1/3rd of his/her SSI. SSI does not want to get into individual monthly supports so sets a standard 1/3rd reduction if one receives regular help with food or shelter costs. That is why it is critical that the parent charge their child " rent " and why the child must pay his/her own food expenses or the rent includes food expenses. Terrie Varnet From: cmfinato <cmfinato@...> Subject: Re: Question: SSI/ Food IPADDUnite Date: Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 9:49 AM  Lori, I can't answer your entire question, but I will say if you stop charging her rent, SSI will reduce her check by one third. Guest guest
Lori-  A SNAP benefit looks at HOUSEHOLD income. If she is her OWN household - pays to live there AND eats, cooks & shops separately, she may qualify for SNAP. (own household - they will only look at her income & her assets).  When you spoke to SSI, did you tell them that she pays for where she lives AND what she eats?  -Sherri   From: Lori on <llr1221@...> Subject: Question: SSI/ Food IPADDUnite Date: Wednesday, March 30, 2011, 12:24 AM  Wondering if anyone can answer my question. Guest guest
If you use her money to buy food for her, she is paying for the food. If you didn't use her money to buy food for her, she isn't paying for the food. I have to deal with this over my years of life on Food Stamp and recertification to know this. I even once visit the Food Stamp office 5 days a week til one of the Food Stamp caseworker got upset with the other caseworker. I am saying it isn't hard to figure that out but being too cautious can impair you from putting down the " truth " that she is paying for the food if you used her money to buy foods for her. I want to help you by sharing my personal experiences. > > > > > > > > > > Wondering if anyone can answer my question. > > > > > > > > > > We have been collecting $250 for rent for my 22 year old daughter for the past 3 years. Guest guest
Hi all: I was told a few years ago that Noah did not qualify for a Link Card (current name for what we know as food stamps) while he was living at home with us. They consider income of all house members for determination. Now that Noah is living in a group home, he was deemed eligible and he now gets $135/month (I think maximum is $150/month) I went online to try to get eligibility information and it is pretty challenging to figure it out, besides which, the information is at least ten years old. One should be able to get specific information for their loved one, from their PAS Agency, according to the online information. I found it interesting to note, by the way, that a person in an institution does not qualify for a Link Card. I guess the thought is that the inflated per person cost of $150,000/per year should cover the food! Ellen Ellen Garber Bronfeld egskb@...
