Guest guest
Priceless advice for us all -- self-advocates, family members, teachers, adult service providers -- from Minnesota Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities. If you still have an IEP or Transition Plan to write, print this out and tape it to your forehead!!! Excerpted from 'It's My Choice' workbook for consumers, one of many free downloadable resources available at www.mnddc.org. SOME THINGS WE KNOW ABOUT HOW PEOPLE LEARN BEST *People learn things best in the places where they happen - like buying things at a store or shaving in the bathroom. *People learn things best when they use the real item - like using real money when learning how to count. *People learn things best when they do them at the time they are usually done - like brushing teeth after a meal or before going to bed. *People learn best from other people - like learning how to work in places where other people work. *People learn best when the things they learn are useful - like using the telephone or taking the bus or writing a check. *It is important to think about things to learn that will help you become more independent where you live and work right now and where you will live and work in the future. EDITORIAL NOTE FROM LAURIE: Remember, services are supposed to follow the person, not the other way around! That means, for example, if your son/daughter joins a health club, and is getting transition services, that the services could follow your kid to and from the health club (i.e. using public transportation to and from home if appropriate; personal attendant, O.T. minutes for locker room instruction; speech or A.T. minutes to help develop a visual system for appropriate communication, task strips for an exercise routine, etc. etc.) This is just one example!! Have I mentioned recently (smile) that transition is not a pre-set PROGRAM that all the kids follow???? It should be individualized to the interests and abilities of your particular loved one, and be geared towards activities that are SUSTAINABLE beyond the 22nd Birthday. Once again, climbing down from the soapbox.... L.
