(NOEWAIT) IMPORTANT IDEAS AND ACTION REQUEST FROM TOM NIERNEY AT CSD

The Center for Self-determination’s “Response†to the ARC/UCP provider-led

recommendations to CMS on prevocational services received many good comments and

a request for the original document as well. Links to both are attached at the

end of this document.

We must guard against the tendency to revert to old ways of providing supports

to people with disabilities that appear to benefit and invest in the

organizations that provide the service rather than investing in the individual

with a disability. In the face of the fiscal crisis we are now enduring it is

not the time to hunker down in the past and expect this storm to pass. It

won’t. Rather now is the time for creativity and imagination in applying the

Principles of Self-Determination.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) needs to hear from all of us

regarding this issue. You may email critical personnel at CMS: Mann

(.mann@...) and Barbara (Barbara.@... )to

express your opinion on the provider draft and the Center response. These CMS

leaders seems open to good ideas.
