Ellen The quality of our lives is enhanced when we can DO more and participate more in life activities. The use of carefully chosen, assistive technology is one way to increase independence, safety, participation, communication and contribution, often saving staff time and agency/school resources. In today's world schools, families, and providers of disability services are faced with an ever-growing population to serve, with limited funding. Assistive technology can help everyone! Technology is anything that helps someone do something! We often think of technology as computers and electronics. Staff and families may be aware of voice output devices for people who cannot speak and may think that this technology is the only one that applies to people with disabilities. Think again! There are literally thousands of devices that can improve the quality of life for people with developmental, physical, or sensory disabilities. Some are low cost, and many can be made very inexpensively. This presentation will enable participants to identify many types of assistive technology from homemade to " low tech " to " high tech " devices. Every IEP requires the consideration of technology needs, and technology needs should be addressed in all adult services plans. Often staff and parents do not know how to address this area of need. This presentation will make staff and parents more creative and effective in identifying and meeting the technology needs of people with any type of disability, at any age, in any setting. Communication skills are essential for a high quality of life. A special focus on improving communication using " low tech " devices is included in this day of learning. Participants will consider Special Principles to use visual/spatial/ concrete objects to communicate, as well as how to select communication goals for impact on the environment. Come learn why print may work better than pictures! Welcome to the 21st Century: Improving the Lives of People with Disabilities Using Low Cost, Low " Tech " Assistive Technology Participants will learn to: ?? Take a broader view of " Technology " and recognize assistive devices in homes, workplaces and schools ?? Learn how technology can help keep people safe ?? Expand the role of technology in educational settings, at home, in the workplace, while socializing and having fun ?? Learn about technology assessments ?? Identify and learn how to access technology related resources ?? Use an effective and practical protocol for the selection of technology ?? Use specific questions to enhance the assistive technology discussion in the IEP and adult services plan ?? Discover how technology can improve social interactions and increase social and communicative competence presented by Barbara T. Doyle, MS March 8, 2011 The Illinois Assistive Technology Program (IATP) serves all of Illinois with many kinds of programs. Their free device loan program enables staff and parents to " try before they buy " devices. Participants will receive materials to help them navigate the funding maze when seeking funding for assistive technology. Tom Ridley, from IATP, will bring equipment for " hands on " low tech experience. Come see and try devices. Learn how to help any person with disabilities become more " able " to DO real life activities at home, school, work, and in the community. IATP ABOUT THE PRESENTER BARBARA T. DOYLE, MS Barbara T.
