Letter To the Editor

I am writing regarding Pang's 6/26/06 story, " Governor

Announces 28 Potential Vetoes, 6/26/2006, on SB 2133, Relating to

Health. " The explanation given was, " This bill limits the use of

vaccines that contain a preservative called thimerosal. The limit could

adversely affect the ability of the medical community to provide

inoculations to people in Hawaii seeking protection from the flu and

other communicable diseases. The bill is too general and does not focus

on those thought most susceptible to thimerosal, namely very young

children. The medical community has expressed significant concerns that

this bill could have negative implications for the public health and

safety of the community. "

A very sad possibility is Hawaii's Governor may not have met Lee

Grossman, his son with autism, and their family. Grossman runs the

Autism Society of America and lives with his family right in Hawaii!

Did the Governor contact Grossman before she considered her possible

veto of the bill? I doubt it. Did the Governor bother to find out how

many of her constituents' families have a loved one with autism?

Probably not. Did the Governor even do her homework? Apparently, not

so.

Perhaps it's not too late to save future Hawaiian generations from

autism. All the Governor needs to do is a little research; make some

calls and meet some people. Her staff should have done all its homework

before advising her. Information on autism is, after all, as close as

the Governor's phone and the Internet. These days to do so all one must

do is turn on CNN, CSPAN and MSNBC. It doesn't take a lot of work to

get the whole story. Bob (NBC) and his daughter (Autism Speaks)

would be glad to fill in any blanks.

Excellent letter. I suspect there won't be too many people who read your comments that will be standing in line early tomorrow morning awaiting their dose of the "toxic" stew listed as "ingredients" on the flu vaccine insert.

By the way, I have heard the doctor is warned against giving a flu vaccine containing thimerosal unless he first questions his patient if they are allergic to it? When and where would the average patient learn they are allergic to thimerosal? Isn't it the doctor's responsibility to alert the patient of an allergy rather than the other way around?

Thanks Bob.

Recently I've noticed a shift in health related stories to putting

more responsibility on the patient and lessening the doctors.

Actually, there was a legal case here where a man almost died

because he was on mulitple meds, prescribed by various doctors, and

the jury determined he did not adequately inform the doctor he was

suing about everything he was on. God knows what side effects he was

suffering from.

How would most people know if they are allergic to Thimerosal, let

alone what Thimerosal even is? I highly doubt the doctor would bother

to explain. Besides, don't most doctors assume Thimerosal is out of

most vaccines and even if it's in there it's such a minute amount,

who cares?

Thanks Thais for the laugh. Thanks Margie Al Cindi and Ellen for your comments.

Still formulating an approach. I start and then sputter!! Probably need to calm

down a bit before trying to write. :)
