Sorry to attach this to an unrelated topic but that

seems to be the only way I can post to this list.

BUT, I just had to share with you that all of a sudden

Jan (15) has started talking in complete, initiated

sentences. Not all the time but at least every day!

Last night I was on the computer and she came

downstairs and came over to me and said, " Look at me!

Where is my new CD? " I suppose we have always

insisted on eye contact that she thinks that is the

only way to get someone's attention! And this morning

as I was leaving I said, " Goodby, Jan. I'm going to

work. " and she said, " I know -- you have to go in to

the office. " This has come about in the past three

weeks and we doin't know if something just finally

clicked, broke loose or we somehow found the right key

or what. But every time it happens I want to shout

for joy and cry at the same time. Behavior and

communication have always been her main problems and

now that the behaviors have improved and the

communication is improving I have great hope. And

just in time for school to start. God knows I wish

the same for all of you.

I've read that there is a big jump in brain maturation during the teen

years. Maybe that is why Jan has started talking more. That's great! I'm

excited for you!

Tamara,

What wonderful news, I'm teared up thinking about what this must be like for

you. My is 8, and I know that things will always change, whether it be

for the good or bad. It's great to hear of changes in an older child. Enjoy

every minute

Wonderful News... I am so very happy for Jan and your family. Has there been

any changes... it might be even a very minor change?

Thanks for sharing the news!! How exciting for you!!! My daughter is 7 and I

hope & dream for full sentences someday!

I read something on the Feat News list about brain plasticity. It mentioned

that from the ages of 0-3 is when the brain develops the most and also

mentioned new research that shows there is another period of high brain

development during puberty. I wonder if this has anything to do with it?

Has anyone else had any breakthroughs during puberty? I don't know how

accurate this study is, but I am just curious.

Thanks,

Dayna

Dear Tamara,

God bless your daughter and you,of course. Everytime our takes one

step forward, she regresses two steps backward in other areas. All we keep

doing is taking each day as it comes. I just want to get her safely through

puberty right now!

Hi everybody!

I just wanted to share my joy at the fact that we've had about three weeks of

PERFECT health here in my house. I spiked 's soy milk with breast milk

during her GI infection, and she and Kate got over theirs several days faster

than I did!! I swear next time I'm putting some in my coffee! I have since read

there is something in breast milk that protects against GI bugs, maybe it's

IgA, I don't know. I just knew I had extra milk stored and it certainly

couldn't hurt to give some to (without her knowledge of course!

MOMMMM!!!!).

Anyway, since then we've had two ballet classes, a trip to Six Flags Great

America (a blast!!!!), a local fair and a time at the mall playground and

's still healthy! She looks like a raccoon, but no other symptoms of sinus

at

all. I think the dark circles might be due to the fact that she has totally

given up her naps for good. She still takes one every once in a while but then

she stays up until like 11pm or something crazy -- just doesn't need all that

sleep.

I'm going through all our mold remediation insurance stuff to finalize the

rest of the claim -- the statute of limitations runs out next week. Burst into

tears upon seeing the picture of 's ER bag that we had to throw out -- a

duffel bag with toys, snacks, stuff to do and change of clothes for those

surprise trips to the ER. Mixed emotions -- miss the bag because it's part of

our

history, sad because it really was a necessary part of our lives, then realized

with utter JOY that we don't have to make those hasty dashes to the ER

anymore!!! We haven't been to the ER since the Fall of 2001!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAPPY

DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hadn't really realized that

before. I am soooo grateful.

I'm also starting to feel very happy about finally pursuing her GERD issues.

Guilt is gone, just glad to be on the road to fixing/figuring it out. She has

bloodwork coming up for it (CBC and Chem 12) and then an upper GI (have

already decided to take chocolate syrup to flavor the barium in case they don't

already) and an endoscopy in July. really wants the " urps " to be done

with!!

I hope I can fulfill that request.

Oh, do we love summer (even more) now that we have a house. Can stay at home

and play in the yard and kiddie pool instead of being exposed to everybody

everywhere. We still have playdates with healthy friends and go places here and

there, but nice not to be stranded in a condo on the second floor with no yard

anymore!!!!!!! 's actually taking swimming lessons starting next week.

There once was a time we didn't dare take her to a public pool! Okay, another

happy dance.

Rambling now... lack of sleep will do that!!!!!!

(mom to Kate, born 9/19/02, dairy intolerant; and , age 4, dairy

intolerant -- currently has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had

transient IgG, IgA, t-cell & other defs)

,

Thanks for the encouraging post! I'm always glad to hear when someone has

good health!

I am happy to report that the health level in our house has been high since

we raised the IVIG dose to 12.5 grams and since Rebekah's eye infection went

away. She still have 30+ stitches holding her eyeball together, but they

aren't infected any more!! And her vision is returning. God was gracious

and merciful and performed a miracle, without a doubt. There will be very

little visible damage to her eyelid or eye itself

Please keep up posted on the GERD issues. We have just started pursuing it

for our non-PID Hannah. We had the appointment today with the ped GI. He

put her back on prilosec, but wants to put her on prozac because he thinks

her problem is anxiety over Rebekah. This kind of comment didn't make us

very happy. It might be true, but it didn't make us happy. Thank you to

whoever mentioned the PAGER association for ped GERD. They have been very

helpful and supportive.

Enjoy those ballet lessons and I hope that the ER bag remains a distant and

bittersweet memory.

Wanted to share some fun news. My 23 year old DD Daughter and I were

interviewed by Meyers of Channel 7, the ABC channel in Chicago regarding

the Center For Enriched Living where Kate is a member. For those who don't

know about the Center, it is a privately funded non-profit agency serving the

social needs of people all ages with developmental disabilities – such as Down

syndrome, autism, Fragile X syndrome. The Center is the place that brings

friends and peers together – to benefit from life-long learning and enrichment,

to enjoy social activities, and to be an active part of the community. The

Center has been serving the Chicago-area for more than 42 years.

The Center offers more than 30 different social and recreation programs to meet

the interests and needs of people ages 5 to 75, with developmental disabilities.

Programs operate 7-days a week – including evenings and weekends. For younger

members, The Center offers afterschool clubs, weekend social programming and

summer camps. For adults in their post-school life, The Center offers REACH – a

day program that provides opportunities for social experiences, work and

volunteer experiences, leisure activities, community life, and much more. Here

is there web site http://www.centerforenrichedliving.org/

We just heard when the Meyers story is going to be aired. It will be this

Sunday, the 20th, at 8:20am. I can't wait to see it!
