Thanks, Diane. I can add something to the files & will let the group know where

it's located. Probably later this week.

Glad you're getting all of these steps figured out. And your advice to others

is spot on: When in doubt, read the directions! Most of this is readily

available, online, at www.socialsecurity.gov. There are sections on the website

to read about SSI, applying for it, questions, etc. Same for SSDI. And then,

for those who are looking at work, there's the SSA 'bible' called The Red Book.

It's online, too.

Thanks for the advice.

Subject: How to Set Up Representative Payee Account

As promised, once I found out, I would share. Really it is very simple, just as

I suspected. This is one of the simple questions I was speaking about a week or

so ago, that should be very easy to share the answers. (It's not taking away

anyones livelyhood.)

The question was: How to name/ title the account that will be set up solely to

receive the SSI funds and ONLY the SSI funds.

According to the Social Security Manual titles " A Guide for Representative

Payees "

(on page 11): Here's two ways: (the wording is straight from the manual word for

word)

1) " {Beneficiary's name} " by [your name], representative payee. "

or

2) " [Your name], representative payee for {beneficiary's name}. "

I hope this infromation can be retained in some way in files. However, since

this is not my personal advise but quoted using the SS manual they hand out as a

reference, maybe the page (p.17) can be copied or something.

Purpose

of the

Red Book

One of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) highest priorities is to

support the efforts of disabled beneficiaries who want to work by developing

policies and services to help them reach their employment goal. The Social

Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

programs include a number of employment support provisions commonly referred to

as work incentives.

The Red Book is a general reference tool designed to provide a working knowledge

of these provisions. We write the Red Book primarily for educators, advocates,

rehabilitation professionals, and counselors who serve persons with

disabilities. We also expect that applicants and beneficiaries will use it as a

self-help guide.

The Red Book contains a general description of our disability-related policies.

For information specific to your situation regarding eligibility or benefits,

you may need to contact us. You will find contact information on, HOW TO REACH

SOCIAL SECURITY<http://www.ssa.gov/redbook/eng/howtoreachus.htm>.

Payee Accounts:

Should also be set up using the adult child's social security number and ONLY

the rep payee should be a signer.

ONLY SSI money should go into this account - no gift money, no working money.

Ok, I totally understand that statement. So what about the $100 dollars of my

money I used to open the account up prior to the 1st installment payment, and

then the $200 dollars the bank gave as a promotion to open the account?

I would apprciate advise on this. Thanks.

Diane, this is what happened in our own personal experience:

I used some of my money to open up Angel's account. I did note in her records

that it was a LOAN from me. This amount was one of the reasons why Angel's

funds were over $2000. Once I documented to SSA this loan and proved that it

was now transferred back to my account, they removed it from her assets.

Angel also received money for opening up the account. At the end of the year,

the bank will issue a 1099-INT for that amount and SSA will ask for all of your

child's bank statements because let's fact it, an account that 'earned' $200 in

interest has to have many thousands of dollars in it. Keep your documentation

on this 'bonus' from the bank because SSA WILL question it later.
