Guest guest
Liz, It's funny the things these 'kids' of ours can do when necessary. Although in 's case, it appears he's just taking on the responsibility himself, not out of necessity. In our house, I'm noticing is also learning how to put that darn bottom sheet on the bed, picks a lot of things up herself, when dressing and showering she's attempting more steps independently, etc...all because I've droned over and over again because 'mom's back hurts and can't bend over' (Lord help me, I'm turning into one of those old people who talks about her health all the time!). Point is, HOORAY for ! And ! And all the other adults whose moms and dads have tirelessly cared for them for decades beyond the norm. There's this phrase right now in education that's popular -- lifelong learning -- and I guess it's true. Our experience teaches us that both adults with disabilities AND the parents who care for them are always learning. For our kids, they're learning new skills and the confidence that they can do things themselves. For us, it's that sometimes we over-help or just get stuck in routines of helping, when in fact we could STEP AWAY and watch the competence unfold before our eyes. As always, thanks for sharing. Laurie P.S. Wasn't there an old book or movie called something like 'Tales from the Front'? That could be IPADD's new tagline. I didn't even know about CART until it was too late for my son to benefit. Sounds like SST would have been just what he needed 10 months ago. Wow; can't believe it's been that long since he's been home. I'm keeping the info in case we ever need it. I'm gonna combine two postings together, as it's been a long 14+ hr work day for me. Yesterday before I went to work, I asked to put his sheets in the dryer. Not only did he do that, but he also put the bottom sheet on his bed fairly decent... I was going to give his Risperidone after coming home last evening from work & didn't see it in his pill container. Asked his dad if he had given it to him & he said " No " . came in & said he took it..ALL BY HIMSELF!!! We're FINALLY getting more instances of him doing things he could/should be doing!!! When stuff like that happens, it makes me so glad we pulled him out of the ICF. Liz
