SSI treats " INCOME " and 'RESOURCES' differently. Income in the month it is

received is not considered a " resource " so depositing two checks in one month

should not be a problem. The problem occurs if on the first day of the next

month, you have not spent down the first check so that total funds in the

account - not counting the recent 'SSI income' deposit on the last of the month

- pushes assets up over $2,000. Hope this makes sense to you. Terrie Varnet

Subject: How To Stop Direct Deposit of SSI

I checked the SSA website and I couldn't find where I can stop direct deposit.

Their direct depositing of two checks in one month when the first of the month

falls on the weekend or a holiday is causing me to go over $2000 and I'm not

going to go through this hassle again.

It's easier for me to get the paper check and deposit it AFTER the first and

AFTER any big checks (like SEASPAR) clear).

Does anyone know how to do this? Everything on the site is to either start it

up or change accounts.

Thanks

Terrie, this is what the Notice of Planned Action said:

Example:

Not Eligible for May 2010

Savings = 679.63

Checking = 1797.80

Total = 2477.43

The checking balance was the balance at 4/30/2010 so May started at that balance

and both accounts total more than $2000.

April's deposits included:

4/1/2010 - 674.00

4/30/2010 - 674.00

Prior to that second deposit, the Bank's checking account balance would have

been $1123.80, plus savings of $679.63 for a total of $1803.43. If I had

received a paper check, it would have been deposited in May and May's checking

account would have started with a balance of $1123.80.

For that month, I also had an uncleared check dated 4/16/10 for $425.00. Had

that check been cleared, May would have started with a balance of $698.80.

In the above example, April ended over $2000 and May started over $2000. End of

May balance - $786.43 - way below $2000.

The only months that SSA has found my daughter not eligible had two SSI deposits

in it, so I don't understand what you are saying.

To stop direct deposit, the payee will need to contact Social Security. What

office do you use? Maybe I can help.

Hi Sherri, I believe I just read where SSA is going to require that all

SSI/SSDI receive electronic payments? This was to result in thousands of

dollars savings in charges associated with paper checks. This change was to

take place in the near future so may have a hard time stopping electronic

deposits. She should appeal the decision to stop SSI for the 2 months she was

over $2,000 based on the information she has provided in her emails. Terrie

Terrie, SSI has me over $2000 for seven months. Only one wasn't because of 2

ssi payments in the month (a very large uncleared check).

I don't understand why Social Security send two checks in 1 month.

It was my understanding that Social Security send installment payment as a 1/3

of total retroactive beneift every 6 months.

The bottomline is that there would have been plenty of opportunity for a bank

" cleaning " previously before end of the month and during the " check processing "

show on the banking online website. Most people who knew about SSI's $2,000

maximum rule know that they have to take money out before end of the month if

the total asset including savings and stocks is worth $2,000.

Within one year, it will be mandated to use direct deposit.

FYI.
