had an appt with his pysch today. He first asked how things were

going, then went to me, ( wasn't up to conversing appropriately...no

surprise there). When he asked me, I told him that I had self diagnosed

with depression. His sleep patterns are erratic, it's like pulling teeth to get

him out of the house most of the time, he wanted to wear his pj's all day, (til

I got smart & took them away.)His appetite is good,though..thank goodness.

Anyway, his doc prescribed Prozac. 20 mg once a day. Anybody been on it that's

benefitted from it? Any bad stuff to be aware of?

I asked him about being taken off it if it doesn't work. If it needed to be

tapered down; he said no. I just read something that says the opposite. (He's

already been through withdrawal...don't want THAT to EVER happen again.

Thanks,

Liz (who's thinking about moving into the governor's mansion with a friend who

suggested it; since it's not being used.)

Prozac are an easy drug prescription to get. Almost everybody who bring

depression to the medical examination gets a Prozac prescription. I got one for

myself about depression. The doctor wrote it without questions asked.

The private phsycologist doctor pointed out that this was not needed for my high

functioning autism.

You should get other people opinion about it but understand that getting these

drug isn't hard as you think.

Thanks Pyle,

I was actually surprised when the doc told me that he was going to try my son on

Prozac. He seemed to agree with the diagnosis I had made of my son's depression.

(He ACTUALLY told me that I know my son the best!!!) Woo hoo! there's HOPE after

all!!!

Anyway, I wasn't so worried about getting the Prozac, just wanting to find

others that had used it & if it helped them.

You said you were on it. Does it seem to do what you wanted? Have you had any

negative effects from it? That's what scares me the most; as my son doesn't

react well to meds.

I had a long talk with my daughter's psychiatrist yesterday (we had to

hospitalize her this week for her depressive/anxiety issues along with our

suspicion that she has an eating disorder) who is starting her on Prozac 10 mg.

She had previously been on Wellbutrin, but with the suspected E.D., there are

some dangers on that one with electolyte levels, etc.

According to the doctor, the Prozac Rx has had the most long standing studies

and she felt the most comfortable with that choice for our daughter - so I too

am researching today.  She did say that like most anti-depressants, there is

the

intial concern of increased suicidal thoughts for the first phase - and some of

the side effects are stomach problems and headaches.

What I said was general information about anybody who may tells their doctor

that they have depression. It wasn't a matter of opinion when I said that it was

easy to get prescription for Prozac.

A person who was in a severe accident was seeking medical help for his stomach.

The doctor look to me him and say, you look sad and wrote prescription for

Prozac then left right away.

Getting Prozac isn't like winning a lottery.

But, any medications that helps people with depression and bipolar is

legitimate. The real questions lies on whether their brain can react to it

properly. If it doesn't work, the effects can potentially go both way while it

takes time.

My stepfather would has been a better candidate that should take mood

medication. He was prescribed to Seroquel for his Bipolar. Needless to say, he

didn't want to say it until a court order him which is a another story.

In my advocate experience, there was a female high functioning autistic with

bipolar who prescribed on Seroquel. I admitted that something was going wrong in

her head til the point that she attempted suicide. Fortunately, the mother was

able to have her still alive. When she was recovering, she admitted that she

didn't know what happen. It is seem that the medication got her under a dark

spell.

A cough medication that contains Dextromethorphan known as the DXM is found in

popular cough syrup brands. When I take it, it does strange things to me, such

as hallucination and hearing loss where sounds are like a mile away, and

diziness. Quite briefly, dextrmethorphhan is a physcotic (spelling) drug. It is

a proof that anything that have to do with mental have to be " experimented "

first before it become a pernament drug. In other scenario, certain cologne

ingredient can be bad for me, beside headache. I do get in a bad mood if it is a

bad ingredient. So far, I have my success with colognes from Avon. I liked

Mesmerize and . However, I learned to keep this clean from my hand if I am

working on math homework. LOL! It does slow me down if it get too snuff.

So, I hope that your child get better and that the right doctor and medication

would help him. If it isn't too instrusive, you could once while monitor for bad

sign, such as what I said before.

Liz,

There are a number of articles about people who go through withdrawal from

different SSRIs (the class of drug which includes Prozac), but I think some

people have problems and others don't. You can always wean off slowly if

you think it best. Dosages of SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)

can vary, so you might want to play around with less if he is too sleepy on the

20mg. One of my sons is always very affected by new medications, so I always

start him off with half of what the doctor prescribes, at least for a few days.

(This doesn't apply to antibiotics.) Sometimes that small dose is enough and

other times I increase.

I honestly don't like having him on this medication.

We went to diazapam for . She also has epilepsy and in the past we had to use multiple meds to mostly control that. We have weaned her off of all of her meds...six of them and she in now only on diazapam. We have totally controled her seizures. She has totally changed. Her moods are sooooo much better. She is talking soooo much more. She is doing so well. She still has some anxieties but they are normal to deal with. I can take her shopping with me. I can not believe the difference. And it is not just us that has noticed the total change in her.She is taking 40mgs a day but I think we can go down about to 30mgs now that she has been off of everything for about 4 months now and all the other meds are out of her system.ElaineFrom: " & Elaine" <forresters2@...>autism Sent: Monday, January 23, 2012 9:57:00 AMSubject: Re: Prozac

Yes, that is what they say, but when we gave it to Karac regularly it began to have side effects; so I began to keep a .05 crushed in a pill bottle and would add it to a little water in a sippy cup and give it to Karac in an emgency. Because it was crushed it would work faster. You are not suppose to do that either, but it worked great for Karac. Karac seems to be Mellowing. I think the swimming three times a week is really helping, and also the frontal lobe maturing. Sent from my iPadOn Jan 23, 2012, at 5:51 AM, james candy <jkcandy2000@...> wrote:

Clonidine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clonidine

Clonidine is increasingly used in conjunction with stimulants to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), for which it is administered in late afternoon or evening for sleep, and because it sometimes helps moderate ADHD-associated impulsive and oppositional behavior, and may reduce tics, a problem in which a part of the body moves repeatedly and suddenly.[2] Clonidine can be used in the treatment of Tourette syndrome (specifically for tics).[3] Clonidine along with Methylphenidate has been studied for treatment of ADHD. [4][5] In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of clonidine either as an adjunct to traditional stimulant therapy or as a monotherapy in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Many uses.

Hello - Has anyone found that Prozac (or any other SSRI) has helped their children with autism? My son was on 30 mg of Prozac and we increased it to 40 mg. to see if we see any improvement with his anxiety, OCD, etc. He's been on the increased dosage for about a month now and I can not say that I've noticed any improvements...he still runs around the house closing all the doors, drawers, cabinets (he has to have things closed) and he still is very impatient when it comes to waiting..still some meltdowns, etc - .no improvements that I can see. I honestly don't like having him on this medication. Thanks,Debbie

DEFINATELY! It was zonegran and keppra that were causing the problems. The only problem I have with diazapam is that she can't take it at bedtime. I have to give it after she is asleep. Too soon and she can't fall asleep.ElaineFrom: "lois noland" <jlois@...>autism Sent: Monday, January 23, 2012 9:17:25 PMSubject: Re: Prozac
