Guest guest
Hi, I agree that we should continue to share opinions on IPADD and maybe even more importantly, information. An earlier email ended with the idea that education is so important. Absolutely. While the stories of our own families are important for legislators to hear, I think we must also be informed about the larger picture in IL to be effective advocates. Last November the Chicago Community Trust (CCT) published a paper entitled " A Quest for Equality: Breaking the Barriers for People with Disabilities. A Call to Action for Illinois' Leaders. " It can be found at: www.cct.org/sites/cct.org/files/CCT_QuestForEqualityWhitePaper_1110.pdf It's a fine overview, with facts and figures, focusing on the issues of Community Living, Education and Employment. And it comes from a respected, non-partisan group that has not been a traditional partner in disability advocacy -- so I think, even more powerful. This report should not just sit on the shelf somewhere. I hope we'll all read it and share it with family and friends as well as Illinois' leaders who must make hard decisions about limited revenue. Another recent email mentioned the Blueprint. In case that's not familiar to all, it's the " Blueprint for System Redesign " that can be found at www.state.il.us/agency/icdd. The redesign -- or rebalancing -- the system would move IL away from large institutions. The CCT white paper includes useful figures, e.g., IL pays an average per-person cost of $142,533 annually to state institutions for people with disabilities. The average annual per person-expenditure for for community based supports is $53,291. Best regards, Bonnie Dohogne
