The Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence Disabilities (OCALI) offer this free publication to assist individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), their families and professionals in preparing for and moving through the transition from being a high school student into adult life. This guide is written in response to the tremendous challenges faced by young adults with ASD, including arranging necessary employment supports and funding them, making connectioms with adult service providers, and managing the often complex social and behavioral challenges that often come with ASD. The ASD Transition Guidelines is 136 pages long and has seven sections. Each section provides information and resources that address the specific challenges individuals with ASD and their families face during the transition process. The seven sections are: - Legal Issues and IEP Requirements Related to Transition - Age-Appropriate Transition Assessment - School Age Programming - Employment - Postsecondary Education - Community Participation - Supported Living Each section has practical information laid out as follows: 1. General Information - concise background information and description of key issues related to ASD and transition. 2. Implications for Students or Individuals with ASD (in all section except legal)- presented in a set of tables. Each table describes characteristics of ASD such as sensory, social, behavior and organization within the context of the subject, such as age-appropriate transition assessment, with a corresponding list of strategies or interventions that might be considered. 3. Tools and Resources - links to many free online resources that can be downloaded or viewed. 4. Agency Collaboration and Funding - agencies that may support or extend transition services with funding or experiences. 5. Activities or Interventions - ideas for activities that reinforce, develop or extend the concepts discussed in the section Appendices The guide has four appendices, each of which are useful tools. Appendices A and B are questionnaires to help young adults identify their needs and preferences in selecting a place to work (Appendix A), and a college or other post-secondary settings (Appendix . The other appendices are the educator version (Appendix C), and parent/family version (Appendix D) of Ohio's Employability/Life Skills Assessment for students with disabilities.
